Libraries have long been key to education, research and culture policies, in Europe and around the world. To continue to deliver the public interest mission given them, they need laws that reflect the times.

We have welcomed the strong ambition expressed by President Juncker and Vice-President Ansip for copyright reforms that will bring the law up to date with the digital age.

Now, IFLA and European library and cultural heritage organisations have set out the concrete changes we need: clarity and security for librarians, better rules on preservation and text and data mining, and protection for library users’ rights against technological measures or contract terms that would otherwise restrict them. Without these changes, copyright risks becoming unbalanced. To see more, read the full document.

We encourage the Commission, MEPs, Member States and other stakeholders to work with us to achieve these changes.
