New EIFL guide: Developing a Library Copyright Policy

EIFL released a new guide "Developing a Library Copyright Policy". This guide is intended to highlight issues when a library is considering the creation of a copyright policy, whether on its own initiative or as part of a wider institutional policy on intellectual property. It considers how to go about drafting a policy and the elements that a library copyright policy might contain.

Library and Archive Groups Delighted by Progress on Copyright Limitations and Exceptions at WIPO

The 23rd session of the World Intellectual Property Organisation’s Standing Committee on Copyright and Related Rights (SCCR) ended on 2nd December 2011. IFLA and library and archive organisations welcome the significant progress made by WIPO Member States towards achieving a global set of copyright limitations and exceptions for libraries and archives.

WIPO: Written comments on limitations and exceptions for libraries and archives until end of February 2012

The 23rd Meeting of the SCCR finished debating its agenda item on copyright limitations and exceptions for libraries and archives on Tuesday morning, 28 November. WIPO Member States have the opportunity to submit written comments on the 'Draft Compilation on Limitations and Exceptions for Libraries and Archives’ by midnight on the 29th February 2012.

SCCR discusses Draft Compilation on Limitations and Exceptions for Libraries and Archives

The 23rd session of the Standing Committee on Copyright and Related Rights continued at WIPO over the weekend. Discussion on Saturday concerned a proposed WIPO Draft Treaty for the Protection of Broadcasting Organisations. On Monday two new documents were introduced: a ‘Working Document on an International Instrument on Limitations for Persons with Print Disabilities’ and a ‘Draft Compilation on Limitations and Exceptions for Libraries and Archives’.

WIPO SCCR begins push to finalise nature of instrument for the visually impaired

Following three days dedicated to a discussion of limitations and exceptions for library and archives at WIPO in Geneva, the SCCR moved on to the pressing topic of a legal instrument to increase access to reading material for the visually impaired.

Ambassadors discuss instrument for people with reading disabilities

On the initiative of Egypt, Mexico and the United States, the Ambassadors to WIPO met with the World Blind Union (WBU) and the International Publishers Association (IPA). The meeting provided the two major stakeholders the opportunity to have an open conversation about the issues important to them on the proposed international instrument for limitations and exceptions for people who are blind or have a print disability.
