Ed King is the winner of the UK Walford Award 2012
The Chartered Institute of Library and Information Professionals (CILIP) is the leading professional body for librarians, information specialists and knowledge managers in the United Kingdom. In remembrance of Albert John Walford, CILIP’s Information Services Group (ISG) honours each year an individual’s outstanding contribution to best practice in the reference and information sector in the UK since 1991.
This year the prize is given to Ed King – long-standing Standing Committee Member, Secretary and Treasurer of the IFLA Newspapers Section – because of his successful commitment to the Newspaper Digitization Programme at the British Library (BL) undertaken in co-operation with Brightsolid, and his exceptional contribution to making a large number of British newspapers up to 1900 readily online accessible.

Ed King receiving the award from CILIP President Phil Bradley on 18th October 2012 at the City Business Library, Guildhall, London.
Since graduating in 1974, Ed can look back to an extraordinary career as Newspaper Librarian in the British Library. As Head of the Newspaper Collections from 1999 to his retirement in 2012, Ed has represented the BL nationally and internationally at conferences both at home and abroad and has written numerous articles on the digitization of newspapers. From 2002 to 2009 he organized conferences each spring and the Open Sessions of the Newspapers Section at IFLA’s General Conferences each year. Moreover, he has been editor and co-editor of many IFLA Newspaper Proceedings resulting from these conferences.
The IFLA Newspapers Section Standing Committee is very proud to congratulate Ed King on this famous award and wish him all the best for his lively retirement.
