What is IFLA doing?

IFLA’s Preservation and Conservation Section and the Preservation and Conservation Strategic Programme (PAC) provide international forums for the exchange, development, and dissemination of knowledge and experience in the field of preservation and conservation. They deal with theories, policies, and practices for the preservation of all heritage.

Since 1984 the Preservation and Conservation Section has worked closely with PAC. PAC was created to ensure that library and archival materials, whether published or unpublished and regardless of format, will be preserved in accessible form. Both bodies are involved with the international preservation and conservation world and keep up-to-date with the technical, scientific, policy, and practical innovations which support the long term accessibility of cultural heritage.

The Preservation and Conservation Section is able to respond quickly to disaster situations and offer practical help, such as training and expertise.

The Section has been working with conflict areas, such as Mali and Haiti to provide help.

The IFLA Key Initiative 4 (‘Cultural Heritage Disaster Reconstruction Programme’) positions preservation and conservation in IFLA’s strategic Plan 2010-2015. The programme is set up to enhance the awareness around Cultural Heritage Disasters.
