Libraries as focusing point of culture and education

The strategy promoted by IFLA in the last month of December 2004 through the document The three pillars. Society, members, profession becomes the main basement for the manifesto required. Those pillars correspond to what are the main tools for a visible and necessary interaction with what are our professional programmes and activities, the challenge of participation at the decisive global debates, and what are biggest issues for libraries development.

I would emphasize on a general idea about the need to put globally culture and libraries at the central focusing point of the society interests. If culture is not at this central place, libraries, as cultural structures, can't be able to increase their resources, fundings, capacities and facilities. Social and political consideration towards libraries is related to the cultural sensibility of societies and governments.

After this general position, my concrete objectives for working as member of GB are the following:
  1. Contribute to find strategies to link libraries with cultural environments in countries and across countries, to make real the social and cultural centrality of libraries. And, at the same time, to find new strategies for advancing globally.
  2. Contribute to make visible the work of libraries and their professionals and make increase their social and cultural value for the development of societies.
  3. Contribute to achieve full open access to information resources trough libraries, working together with all organizations concerned.
  4. Contribute to increase the visibility and efficiency of the use of official languages of IFLA with the main aim to give real opportunities to people to have access to IFLA activities in all fields.
  5. Contribute to reinforce e-learning and literacy within all levels and sectors of societies through libraries.
