My first direct involvement with IFLA was in 1996 when I attended its conference in Beijing. During the 1996 General conference and Assembly of IFLA, Beijing. I was the Special Personal Assistant to the President and General secretary of IFLA, to liaison with Chinese Organizing Committee and as the formal interpreter. That gave me a through understanding behind the scene the full internal operation of an IFLA General Conference, and I got enthusiastic about the goals and the work of IFLA. I believe that personal contacts and networks resulting from IFLA represent an excellent opportunity for all librarians to participate in the global development and to work together to strengthen professional work.

When decided to run for the Governing Board of IFLA, I am taking this as an opportunity to push for greater, active, and even proactive involvement of Chinese libraries in IFLA, in key issues on the sustainable development of an information society, such as copyright, open access, digital divide, digital preservation, and convergence of digital information and e-environment such as e-science or e-learning.

In recent years I worked as a practitioner with a strong research background, pushing energetically for digital library development, digital library standards, networked collaborations, and knowledge-oriented information service models in China. I also have been active in international activities and organized a number of international conferences on issues from collaborative management of digital resources, to digital preservation, and to policies on open access.

In the time when co-operation and collaboration are needed more than ever before, I fully understand the importance of promoting professional communications among various nations and languages. I will make endeavors to build an open and inviting forum, on which our colleagues all over the world can fully and freely express their ideas and opinions. It is my strong wish and will be my greatest honor to serve IFLA as the member of Governing Board of IFLA 2005-2007.
