Serving on the IFLA Governing Board from 2005-2007 has provided a broad exposure to the issues and opportunities facing our association. While I have been active in two sections and involved in IFLA for many years, recent activities such as our involvement in the World Summit on the Information Society have provided expanded opportunities to advocate for and speak out about the crucial role of libraries and information literacy in the global environment in which we all work and live.
During the past year, IFLA leadership has finalized a strategic plan and decided how we will prioritize our activities and resources. Priorities include creating an advocacy capability at IFLA headquarters; revitalizing IFLA's website for professional development and exchange; developing diverse, broad based and stable sources of funding other than membership; organizing the annual Congress; reviewing IFLA professional groups; and developing a toolkit to help identify potential membership markets. I think that advocacy and diverse sources of funding are very important areas for future success and some changes underway should strengthen these activities.
I look forward to the opportunity to spend two additional years working with other IFLA members on the Governing Board to strengthen our association. There are many important activities we must support to make library associations and librarians central players in developing and enhancing global information activities and policies. I would welcome the opportunity to continue work on these important initiatives with IFLA staff, leaders, and members.
