THEME: Libraries and librarians as change agents, connectors and points of convergence: from grass-roots to global

MOTTO: Change, Connect, Converge

I deem it an honour to be one of the nominees for IFLA President-elect and thank all those who supported my candidacy. Should I become President-elect of IFLA my vision is to build on the strategic directions created and established by past presidents and further the outstanding achievements of IFLA as the global voice of the library and information profession.

I would do this by promoting and consummating IFLA's strategic directions, in particular the development of equitable and 'quality library and information services in all parts of the world', and the establishment of greater collaboration and new models of cooperation between libraries globally.

My strategies would be to:
  • establish stronger alliances with similar/related regional and international bodies/services;
  • enhance capacities to generate and use information - particularly in regard to developing countries;
  • promote the contribution of libraries to sustainable development, democracy and upliftment of all people; and
  • facilitate better/greater understanding/dialogue between international library and information professionals.

MY EXPERIENCE:
My substantive IFLA involvement includes: Member GB and Executive Committee (2001-5); Member, IFLA's team to the World Summit on the Information Society (WSIS) (Paris and Geneva); Member, Africa Section Standing Committee; and Chair, National Committee for IFLA World Library and Information Congress, Durban 2007.

I also served as President of LIASA (Library and Information Association of South Africa) (1998-2002). I therefore feel my professional and managerial experiences make me eminently qualified to be elected President-elect of IFLA 2007-2009 and seek your support in this regard. Should I be so chosen through my motto of Change, Connect and Converge I seek to advance the profession and its members from grass-roots to globally.
