Preservation Technologies Satellite Meeting 2008 Attendance Grant

This grant was established to support professional development for the preservation of cultural heritage.

Preservation Technologies is working to preserve the artifactual content of collections held by libraries, archives, and museums worldwide. PTLP’s two divisions are Bookkeeper, for the deacidification of paper-based collections and The MediaPreserve An Audio Visual Laboratory, where they are capable of converting all formats of audio and video tape. Presently they are dealing with cultural repositories, as well as corporations and the creators of media such as radio, television, amateur and professional sports, and entertainment (motion picture and recorded sound). With two offices in the U.S., PTLP has also has operations in Canada, Japan, the Netherlands, Poland and Spain.

Preservation Technologies, L.P. (PTLP) is pleased to sponsor this grant in support of the Preservation and Conservation Section and IFLA.

Goal

To encourage participation in the IFLA Preservation and Conservation Satellite Meeting by providing funds for registration and transportation.

Eligibility

The applicant must be a delegate from a developing country who is attending the Satellite Meeting as part of their attending the IFLA 2008 World Library and Information Congress (WLIC) in Quebec City.

Budget

Maximum $2,500 CDN

Application Procedures

The applicant must complete the application form and prepare a statement that addresses the review criteria. The applicant must describe as precisely as possible the estimated expenses for registration and transportation, which are the only allowable expenses. All other expenses are not covered by the grant. The applicant must have documentation to verify support for attendance at the IFLA 2008 Quebec WLIC.

Electronic submissions are preferable but not required.

You may submit your application electronically only if all your materials (with the exception of your letter of support) can be submitted electronically in PDF, RTF or MS-Word format. Name the files to include your last name and send the files as email attachments to per.cullhed@ub.uu.se

Your letters of support can be submitted as email attachments, but must show signatures. Otherwise, letters must be mailed (see address at the bottom of the application form). The letters must be received by the deadline.

Deadlines

Applications must be received on or before May 12, 2008. Selection of the recipient will be decided by May 23. All applicants will be informed of the outcome by May 30.

In the event of a cancellation or withdrawal, the grant will go to the first person on the list of runners-up. Where two or more candidates fit the distribution criteria equally well, selection will be made by a draw from the pool of eligible candidates.

Grant Regulations

Please note the following important points:

  • The applicant must be from a developing country.
  • Only registration and transportation expenses for the Satellite Meeting are covered by this grant.
    Allowable expenses include:
    • The registration fee for the satellite meeting.
    • Economy airfare cost to travel to Canada and return home, and economy airfare or train fare to travel from Ottawa to Quebec City.
  • 80% of the grant will be paid in advance. Original receipts must be submitted within 30 days following the Satellite Meeting to justify expenses covered to date and make claim for payment of the outstanding 20% of the grant.
  • At minimum the applicant agrees to write up a report on the Satellite Meeting for publication in a preservation newsletter in their home country.
  • In the event that a successful applicant is unable to attend the Satellite Meeting (Ottawa) and WLIC (Quebec) by reason of illness or other emergency, full return of any grant advance monies is expected.
  • Applicants agree to abide by these regulations when they sign the application form.

Selection Committee

The Selection Committee consists of the IFLA Preservation and Conservation executive committee and a representative of Preservation Technologies PTLP.

Evaluation Criteria

The applicant’s justification statement must address these issues:

  • The usefulness of the satellite meeting to you and your institution and the field of preservation
  • Ability and commitment of the applicant to disseminate outcomes of the Satellite Meeting (publications, teaching, presentations, etc.)
  • Demonstrated funding support to attend the IFLA 2008 WLIC in Quebec City.

A submission must be received by the deadline and include the following in order to be considered complete for consideration by the selection committee:

  • Completed application form
  • Applicant’s justification statement
  • Two letters of support, one from your current institution
