International Literacy Day
IFLA invites libraries and librarians all over the world to join in the celebration of International Literacy Day.
International Literacy Day is celebrated on September 8 every year. It was originally designated in 1965 by the United Nations Educational, Scientific, and Cultural Organisation (UNESCO) in 1965. Today, communities and countries throughout the world observe International Literacy Day in a variety of ways.
IFLA recognises literacy as a key tool for the sustainable development of people and communities. Libraries and libraries have a fundamental role in helping people acquire this essential tool and develop the skills required to use it. Several IFLA professional groups have undertaken projects to promote literacy throughout the world. Examples include the post-conference seminar on "Reading and Libraries in Developing Countries" and the Books for All scheme with assistance of Unesco. In 1995 the professional Board of IFLA set up a Working Group to study the feasibility of a major initiative in support of literacy programmes of libraries. That group reported buring the IFLA general conference in Bangkok in August. Its recommendations are now being considered for action.
In the meantime, this is an excellent opportunity to reflect on how the library profession can work with partners who share the belief that the fight against illiteracy continues to be a major priority throughout the world.
