Library Visits
Thursday 22 August

Thursday 22 August is your opportunity to go out and about - seeing at first hand the great variety of library and information centres located in the Central Belt of Scotland - the area stretching between the Southern Uplands and the Highlands.

All tours will be by coach from the Conference Centre, and include libraries in Glasgow, Edinburgh and other locations in Central Scotland. All visits will be over in time for free time in Edinbugh (a shuttle coach service from Glasgow is available for those not visiting Edinburgh) when it will be possible to experience the unique atmosphere of the Edinburgh International Festival prior to your Reception in the National Museums of Scotland.

Reserve your choice at the Library Visits Desk - open from 14.00-17.00 on Friday 16 August and 10.00-17.00 daily thereafter.  

National Libraries and Archives

National Archives of Scotland, Edinburgh

One of the most varied collections of records in Britain, spanning the 12th to the 21st centuries. Records touch on virtually every aspect of Scottish life and it is the main archive for sources on the history of Scotland as a separate Kingdom.

National Library of Scotland, Edinburgh

The world's leading repository for the printed and manuscript record of Scotland's history and culture, and the legal deposit library for Scotland. It holds over 7 million printed items and a large collection of manuscripts.

Public Libraries

Andrew Carnegie's Central Library with its renowned series of subject collections and unique local studies archives. The new state-of-the-art Muirhouse library, will also be visited.

Glasgow Libraries, Information and Archive Service

Visits will be made either to two of the newly-developed Learning Centres or to the Mitchell Library, one of the largest public reference libraries in Europe with approx. 1.5 million books and unique and specialist collections, including that of Robert Burns.

Dunfermline Carnegie Library

The first of Andrew Carnegie's libraries, built in his birthplace of Dunfermline.

Higher Education Libraries

Edinburgh University Library

One of the largest academic library buildings in Europe, it has recently seen a major refurbishment of several main areas.

Glasgow Caledonian University Library

In a modern purpose built campus in the centre of the city, special collections include Scottish labour movement history and South African studies.

Glasgow University Library

Assembled over more than 500 years, collections reflect the achievements of international scholarship, including Scotland's own remarkable contribution, since the Middle Ages. Special collections include the Hunterian Collection, many medieval manuscripts and early printed books.

Napier University Library, Edinburgh

Napier University was founded in 1992, though its origins go back to several constituent colleges. The library at the Merchiston Learning Centre contains the Edward Clark Collection, some 5,000 items illustrating the development of printing, binding and the book from the 16th century onwards.

Paisley University Library

The Robertson Trust Library and Learning Resource Centre was opened in 1998. It operates both as a hybrid library and as the hub of distributed library services to a wide area of rural South West Scotland, through remote electronic access.

Stirling University Library

A unique feature of this library is that it has its own Press Room with nineteenth century printing presses, and a paper laboratory. Special collections include the John Grierson and Lindsay Anderson archives on documentary film.

Andersonian Library, University of Strathclyde

The University's origin lies in a bequest from John Anderson, who, in 1796 left funds for the creation of "a place of useful learning". The Andersonian Library has a reputation for research into innovation in electronic information provision and delivery, alongside the Centre for Digital Library Research.

Edinburgh College of Art

A total bookstock of around 100,000 items and extensive visual resource and map collections.

Glasgow School of Art

At the heart of the campus is architect Charles Rennie Mackintosh's famous masterwork, now known as the Mackintosh Building. The GSA Archives, newly housed in a Research Centre, reach back to the I8th century, with Mackintosh material as a particular strength.

Royal Scottish Academy of Music and Drama

The Whittaker Library is particularly strong in Scottish music and performance materials. The extensive collection of field recordings of Scottish music is currently being made available on the Internet.

Further Education Libraries

Langside College, Glasgow

The college has a new complex which houses the library and learning resources.

Stow College

On the north side of Glasgow, Stow College provides education and industrial training.

Special Libraries

BBC Scotland Resource Centre
The Centre serves the needs of the broadcasters in Scotland, providing information in all formats.

Royal Botanic Garden Library, Edinburgh

One of the UK's largest botanical libraries, it specialises in systematic botany, with material on garden history and design, conservation and botanical illustration and exploration.

Royal College of Physicians Library, Edinburgh

The library has many rare and unique items of scientific interest and historical importance and a collection of 50,000 printed monographs.

Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Glasgow

A collection of some 35,000 books, and college archives dating back to 1602, as well as the papers of local medical societies and notable local medical practitioners.

Scottish Poetry Library

With an emphasis on work from Scotland from the 20th-21st centuries, the collection is housed in new award-winning premises in the centre of Edinburgh.

School Libraries

Visits will be possible to two school libraries in Glasgow, one in a large secondary school, then with a choice either of a centre serving a Special Needs School (for pupils with learning and other disabilities) or a library in a school in an area of multiple deprivation. There is also a separate visit to a community library located in a secondary school in Dunbarton about twenty miles from Glasgow.

Alliance Francaise
The library of the Glasgow office of the Alliance Francaise serves the needs of the varied courses, professional and recreational, run by the Alliance for the Glasgow district.

Historic Libraries

Leighton Library and Innerpeffray Library
(These two small but fascinating historic libraries, between Stirling and Perth will be visited together.)

Leighton Library

Built around 1684, this small two-storey library was created for the books of Robert Leighton, once the Bishop of Dunblane. In use until 1840, it was restored and reopened only in 1992.

Innerpeffray Library

The oldest free lending library in Scotland, founded about 1680, it was established with a school by David Drummond, 3rd Lord Madertie, brother-in-law of the "Great Marquis of Montrose". Rich in bibles, the oldest being in French from 1530.

A major industrial archaeological complex in South Lanarkshire, the area includes two of Scotland's oldest community libraries: Leadhills Reading Society, founded in 1741, Britain's (and probably Europe's) oldest working class subscription library; and Wanlockhead Miners' Library founded in 1756.
