Library ToursPlease indicate your choice on the conference registration form and confirm on-site when registering.Comprehensive General LibrariesThe National Library of Korea The National Library of Korea was founded in 1945 and has been acquiring and preserving the Korean people's intellectual and cultural heritage through legal deposits and publishing national bibliographies for our descendent's. As of 2005, the library holds the collection of over 5.4 million items comprising of books, serials, manuscripts, maps, newspapers, microfilms, digital materials and old books including 3,171 items designated as old rare books. With a completion target of 2008, the library has been constructing a new building near the main building which will serve as extended stacks. The building also house as the National Digital Library which will provide information services of digital resources. In addition, the National Children's Library as a branch library in Yeoksamdong, Seoul will be opened in May 2006, promoting children's reading and providing researchers with resources related to children's books. Parliamentary LibrariesThe National Assembly Library Since 1952, a principal mission of the National Assembly Library is to promote democracy through the best practices in servicing the National Assembly with impartial, accurate, and up-to-date information to support legislative activities. The library has built the richest and largest social science collection in Korea. The total collection of the Library consists of around 2,420,000 volumes of books/non-book materials and 500,000 digitized books in full-text. Through the new extension of our services, the National Assembly Digital Library, the public may access our broad database via online from 530 universities and public libraries throughout the country. The National Assembly Library is located in the southwestern part of Seoul. There are 28,070m² of main building and 7,970m² of Stack Rooms. Law LibrariesSupreme Court Library of Korea The library is situated inside the official building of the Supreme Court of Korea in Seoul. As the main library of the judiciary of Korea, the Supreme Court Library conducts the libraries of all levels of courts in the country. Overall, the court library system contains about 1,280,000 various law-related books, among which the Supreme Court Library holds the collection of about 238,000 volumes, both domestic and foreign. Since 1996, to support an integrated search for cases, legal documents and laws, the library is building the "Legal Information Databases (the Law World)", which is accessible by internal users like judges as well as the general public. Currently, the library is pressing forward projects related to providing various legal information, including Supreme Court Decisions Report, Collection of Supreme Court Decisions, the English edition of "Collection of Supreme Court Decisions," and Commentaries on Supreme Court Decisions etc. Public LibrariesChungnang Public Library Located in Jungrang-gu in the northeastern part of Seoul, the library focuses on the provision of information and life-long education opportunities. It was opened in March 1999 and expanded in 2004. It has a room for the handicapped and the aged, an infant room, a children's room, an audio-visual room, a general service room, and an electronic library service room. It endeavors to provide a children-friendly environment and to carry out various cultural activities in order to promote children's reading. It operates one branch library and supports the operation of 25 small lending libraries (Mungo). The Gwacheon Provincial Library of Gyeonggi Opened in 1984, the library is located in Gwacheon, known as the garden city, the seat of a second Government Complex. Located in the middle of this small city with a population of 70,000, it is accessible by ten minutes' walk from anywhere in the city. Along with 320,000 books, it has a general service room, a reference service room, a periodical room, a digital library service room with more than 20,000 items of data, and a 120-seat children's room with 60,000-plus books. It boasts the highest level library material use (1,534,240 circulations in 2004) among the 65 public libraries in Gyeonggi Province. It operates 17 cultural lecture programmes for local residents and 10 reading groups for different user groups, such as children, young adults and housewives. Gwacheon Public Library of Information & Science Opened in 2002, the four-storey library with a floor space of 10,027m² is located within a beautiful park. With its natural lighting, it is loved by local residents as a cultural centre with an array of information materials, including 16,000 books and 8,000 non-books. The WAN network, linking it with schools and public centres in the area, makes it possible to carry out integrated retrievals and provides information required for school curricula. The library endeavors to work in the interest of the community by providing assistance to school libraries and operating a mobile library. It provides digital library services, including a mobile book retrieval service, a VOD music appreciation service, an e-book service for children, a CD-NET and web service, and a full-text database service. Incheon Metropolitan Yeonsu Library The library is located in the port city of Incheon about 45km west of Seoul. Equipped with a high-speed data network (both wired and wireless), it operates a reading room for children, a digital service room with a variety of application software and digital devices, and a lecture room dedicated to ICT training for local residents. With the help of the computer environment, the library strives to provide services intended for any time, any where, anyone and anything. It also acts as a central point for knowledge, education and culture for local residents. It has about 70,000 books plus 300 periodicals. Incheon Metropolitan Gyeyang Library Under the slogan of friendship, discovery and satisfaction, the newly built public library aims to be a hi-tech digital library that employs advanced technologies such as radio frequency identification (RFID) and unmanned information system. It emphasizes kindness, a pleasant environment, timely and useful information and diverse cultural contents. It tries to meet the requirements of local residents by providing reading materials suited to the knowledge/information-based era, actively engaging people to read books. The library does its best to lay the groundwork for lifetime learning for local residents, while carrying out environment conservation projects, including one entitled "Fireflies at Mt. Gyeyang." There are 68,000 books in the three-storey (with a basement), 5,950m², 1,387-seat library. Jeongdok Public Library Opened in 1977 and located in Jongro-gu (the area is regarded as a political, economic and cultural centre of the nation), Seoul. The library is composed of three library buildings and the Seoul Education Museum as the library's ancillary facility. Seasonal color changes of trees and flowers in the garden provide visitors with a pleasant experience. It has secured its position as a central place for information, culture and education for local residents. It has 480,000 items of materials, including books, periodicals, masters and doctoral theses and genealogical documents. About 4,000 people use the library on an average day. Jungwon Public Library Along with 157,960 books and other materials, it operates an electronic library that provides local information to visitors, the e-book service and a cyber-based learning materials service. It also provides ICT courses and lectures for local residents. Other programs it operates for local residents include: the Library Week, the Book of the Month Reading, a mobile library, a one-day first-hand experience of a library, story-telling for children, reading group, etc. The four-storey (with a basement), 13,160m² -sized building has a variety of convenience facilities designed to meet the requirements of people from various walks of life. Namsan Public Library The library was opened in 1922 as the first public library in Seoul and is located at the hillside of Mt. Namsan, boasting a natural scenic landscape in the city center of Seoul. It has 450,000 books, including ancient rare books and 10,000 audio-visual materials. It annually holds a writing contest and invites the public to join in a prize contest for best description of their impression of a book, while providing an exhibition space and cultural lecture programmes all year round for local residents. It also focuses its efforts on encouraging youth to read good books through various occasions and provides consultations on how to run a school library efficiently. As well, it is engaged in librarians' mutual visits, exchange of materials and inter library loans with its counterparts in neighboring countries. Seongbuk Digital Public Library Opened in 2002 as a municipal library in Seongbuk-gu, Seoul, it endeavors to grow as a leading library in the information-centered era and expand its role beyond what used to be regarded as public libraries' role under the slogan of "A library providing refreshed imaginativeness." With about 60,000 books and other materials, it aims to provide more opportunities related to information, culture and education to local residents, in addition to offering information services based on digital contents. Seoksu Public Library The library is located in the city centre of Anyang, an hour's drive south of Seoul. Opened in 2003, the six-storey (with basements), 10,650m² - sized library focuses on its pure science and foreign material services supported by the electronic library system and the RFID material management system. Recently, it opened a room for first-hand experience of multimedia as well as an infant-care room and a children's room. Equipped with 160,000 books, it also provides foreign materials obtained from seven foreign cities. In particular, the image-based full text system that provides information on the history and local materials concerning Anyang is designed to be user friendly and easy to access. Academic and Research LibrariesThe Theological Library, Catholic University of Korea The library is located at Daehak-ro, Seoul, which is a popular street for youth. Its history dates back to 1855, when St. Joseph Seminary was established. It endeavors to provide materials required for research carried out by professors and students. Theology-related information is also available via a multimedia system to keep in step with the University's mission to train future leaders for Korean Catholic churches and play the role of the highest Catholic educational institution. Books related to theology and philosophy account for 60% of the 176,000 books, the highest number of books per student (i.e. 660 books) in Korea. Hansung University Digital Library Hansung University was founded in 1972 and the library was opened in 1973. The new library building, which was constructed in 2003, won the 2004 Korean Architecture Award for its appealing design. The new library is divided into several sections: language and literature, social science, science, and art. In addition, there is a special section that holds multimedia, audio, video, and digital materials. A variety of multimedia works are available. It is equipped with the most up-to-date system, i.e. full-text digitization system and biometric-based ID system, in addition to the library information system. Although the library is small in physical size and consists of only 320,000 volumes and approximately 6,800 other materials, it offers distinctive services, such as FISP (Forecast Information Service Programme) for the faculty and Mobile Internet Service. Hanyang University Paiknam Academic Information Centre & Library The central library of Hanyang University is an ultra-modern, user-centered library that was newly built in 1998. The six-storey, 20,500m² - sized building has reading rooms in basements one and two, five subject-based information/material rooms on floors one through five, and an international congress room equipped with a four-language simultaneous interpretation system and video-conferencing system on the sixth floor. There are 1.3 million books, plus three separate buildings dedicated to the subjects of medicine, law, and music, as well as a separate room for natural science materials. In 1995, it adopted a GUI, Client/server environment library automation system, the first of its kind in Korea. The 133-seat electronic information retrieval room provides a retrieval/inspection service for A/V, VCD, DVD, Microfilm, etc. Korea University Library Opened 100 years ago, Korea University is one of the top private highest educational institutions. Its library boasts an impressive array of 2 million books, including national treasures and various precious materials, 7,000 kinds of academic journals, and 15,000 kinds of electronic journals. The University Library is comprised of the Central Library, the Science Library, the Medical Library, and the Centennial Digital Library. The Central Library was built in 1937 and owns precious ancient books and documents, some of which date back to the 16th century. The Centennial Digital Library, which was opened in May 2005, boasts hi-tech facilities and equipment. The library's electronic library system was developed based on METS and MODS and contains a variety of electronic information sources. The Seoul National University Library The Seoul National University is one of the most competitive collegiate institutions in Korea. The main campus of the University, called Gwanak is located at the foot of the magnificent Gwanak Mountain. The Library, founded in 1946, is a government-supported institution with an enrollment of around 29,000 undergraduate and graduate students and 1,500 faculty members. The six-storey library building has over 4,000 seats for reading with a collection of 2.8 million volumes. There is also the SNU Digital Library with a variety of function-specific rooms in the Main Library and six branch libraries: College of Law, Medicine, Agriculture and Life Science, Business Administration, Social Science, and Dentistry. Sookmyung Women's University Library Sookmyung Women's University (SMU) was founded in 1906 by the Queen Uhm (the Consort of King Kojong of Joseon Dynasty), and celebrating the 100th Anniversary in 2006. With approximately 10,000 undergraduate and 3,000 graduate students, SMU is one of the leading universities in Korea. The main library building was recently renovated and the new annex building was added in 2005. The library has over 800,000 volumes and provides major electronic resources. It has a special research collection of women's literature in the World Women's Literature Center (WOWLIC). There is a 19-seat theater with an extensive DVD collection for class and general students viewing. Sogang University Loyola Library Loyola Library opened the present main library building in 1974 as the first open-stack university library in Korea. It was named Loyola Library in honor of Ignatius of Loyola (1491-1556), the founder of the Society of Jesus. In 1986 it started the first computerized university library circulation system in Korea. As we emphasize individualized reference services, there is a Reference Service Desk in each of the Loyola Library buildings. The Library collections include 730,000 volumes of monographs, about 6,200 titles of scholarly journals, and 37,000 volumes of reference materials. In addition, it has various kinds of non-print materials such as e-Resources, microform materials, and audio-visual materials. Presbyterian College and Theological Seminary Library Established by American missionary Samuel A. Moffett in 1901, the college is located at the hillside of Mt. Acha in Seoul. Its library was opened with books contributed from Union-PSCE of the U.S. and donations from the First Presbyterian Church, Oklahoma in 1960. In addition to students and graduates, local residents are also allowed access to 240,000 books (i.e. 120 books per student). The collection of books includes those containing not only in depth contents concerning religion and theology, but also related to various major fields of study and liberal arts. Work for computerization of the library was started in 1989. The three-storey library is comprised of digital information rooms, five reading rooms, a precious material room, a school history information room and the historic museum of the school. Yonsei University Central Library Based on the principles of Christian teaching, Yonsei University is Korea's oldest university, founded in 1885. The library's collections consist of more than 1.6 million printed works and 15,000 serials. The distinctive and unique rare book collections, including some important Korean classics worthy of national treasures, number over 100,000. A variety of electronic resources, including 160 academic databases, 22,000 e-journals, and 16,600 e-books can be accessed from on and off campus. With the ongoing project for constructing a new library building, the library aims to be a research-oriented library complex emphasizing the generation and the dissemination of knowledge in the digital age. The KDJ Presidential Library, the first of its kind in Korea, was established in 2003 to house the works and commemorate the life-long path of Kim Dae-jung, former President of the Republic of Korea and 2000 Nobel Peace Prize Laureate. It takes 10 minutes by shuttle bus from the Central Library to the KDJ Presidential Library. The KDJ Presidential Library contains 46,000 historical materials related to the Kim Dae-jung Government, Korean unification, and Kim Dae-jung's pre-presidency times. They include books, letters, historical documents, photographs, videotapes, CDs, news broadcasts, press statements, audiotapes of speeches and the personal collections of President Kim. The Medical Library is one of the largest medical libraries in Korea and serves Yonsei University's College of Medicine, Dentistry and Nursing and the Graduate School of Public Health. The library is located in the College of Medicine, a 10-minute walk from the Central Library. The Medical Library holds approximately 170,000 volumes, 604 titles of printed journals, 2,100 audio-visual materials. The library also provides access to 4,900 e-journals, 105 e-books and 37 online databases including MEDLINE and CINAHL. Special LibrariesInformation Centre on North Korea The Information Center of the Ministry of Unification on North Korea was opened in 1989 in order to help better the understanding of ordinary people about the reality of North Korea and to enhance the level of assistance to research activities concerning unification. In addition to having more than 90,000 books and other articles concerning unification and the North, it shows films made in the North and holds explanatory sessions on the North, inviting North Korean defectors in an effort to foster an atmosphere conducive to national unification. It acts as an exceptional channel through which ordinary Koreans can get materials on the North. Information & Resources Centre, POSCO Research Institute POSCO Research Institute was established in 1994 to provide managerial consulting services to POSCO, one of the world best steel companies. The Knowledge Asset Centre has contributed to increase research productivity and competitiveness through providing a variety of information services for its researchers. The center develops, analyzes, and manages core knowledge information. The center selects and connects domestic and foreign DB such as e-journal DB, company profile DB, and etc. The center provides user oriented services such as the customized information service on each research project, and alert services. The collection consists of 30,000 monographs, 620 serials, 25,000 e-journals, 2,000 multimedia materials, and 80 online DB. KBS Archives for Broadcast Contents KBS (Korean Broadcasting System), one of the leading broadcasting stations in Korea, is located on Yeoeui Island, in the Han River in Seoul. KBS Archives was established in 1957 to support its reporters and producers. KBS Archives has 540,000 video tapes containing TV programs, 460,000 music CDs, 500,000 recording tapes containing radio programs, 110,000 books, 400 titles of magazines, 870,000 photos, and 40,000 personal profiles. The collections are stored in 16 places (3,900m² in total) in several buildings. KBS Archives started audio archiving in 2005 to have a total of 110,000 pieces of music contained in CDs transformed into WAVE files for use in digital broadcasts, including DMB. The archives' collection is opened to researchers and institutes in broadcasting fields through "Open Library". Art Library & Information Centre, the Korean Culture and Arts Foundation Art Library & Information Centre at The Korean Culture and Arts Foundation was established in 1979 to support artists and cultural activists. The Centre has 230,000 books and non-book materials related to music, dance, plays, literature, fine arts, traditional arts, exhibition pamphlets and posters, video films, DVDs, CDs, and databases. Its Art-Related Information Section collects various performance and exhibition materials for provision of real-time service via its homepage after transforming them into digital forms. The centre aims to play the role of an archives focused on arts and culture in the digital era. The centre also provides a variety of lectures such as classical music and poem composition for users to disseminate culture and art. Korean Braille Library The Korean Braille Library was established in 1969. The library is the first Braille library in Korea and has grown to be Korea's greatest Braille library in size and scale. The library provides a lending service of Braille and DAISY books and a service of recording and translating in Braille data for print-disabled people with dyslexia, serious physically handicapped people, the elderly, the blind, and the visually impaired. In addition, it issues various publications such as the newsletter of the local or national government, a zip code book, and a guidebook. It has been the leading center for a national network that provides Braille, DAISY, and Tactile books for the local Braille libraries and public libraries throughout the nation. Korea Institute of Science and Technology Information (KISTI) Korea Institute of Science and Technology Information (KISTI) is a national focal point in the field of scientific and technological information activities in Korea under the Ministry of Science & Technology. The objective is to contribute to the promotion of international competitiveness of science and technology. To attain this objective, KISTI is devoted to collect, process and distribute scientific and technological information comprehensively and disseminate to industries, academic circles, R & D institutes, etc. The main functions are to: (1) Construct and develop information infrastructure in science and technology, (2) Construct and operate the system of development and expansion of information resources, (3) Operate the National Supercomputing Center, and (4) Provide information service for development and promotion of science and technology. LG Sangnam Library LG Sangnam Library was founded by the LG Yonam Foundation in 1996. The library is the first Korean digital library focused on the Science & Technology fields. The library building was donated by Cha-Kyung Koo, the honorary chairman of the LG Group. The library collects Sci-Tech information resources that are hard to obtain in Korea. About 2 million records (articles, lecture notes, multimedia resources etc.) have been collected since its opening. The new project of LG Sangnam Library, "Ubiquitous Library for the Disabled," is under construction and will open in 2006. Mapo Lifelong Learning Centre Originally established as the Mapo Municipal Library in 1980, it was re-launched under the present name in 1999. The 9,910 square meter center building is five-storeys high. The building is comprised of lecture rooms providing a total of 110 courses in 14 subject areas, a swimming pool, a health facility, a digital/periodical room, a library and information science room, a children's room, and a room for the visually impaired. It has 200,000 books, including children's books, and 24,000 talking books and e-books. The centre maintains a cooperative network with its counterparts in other regions, while carrying out the function of training those engaged in lifetime education and running a team of volunteer retirees with expert knowledge and experience wishing to contribute to lifetime education projects. Nowon Children's Library Opened in March 2003, Nowon Children's Library aims to help children from early age form the proper reading habits and acquire a wide range of information, in addition to playing the role of a cultural and welfare facility for local residents. The library also provides Internet-based hi-tech information via a digital material room. The library endeavors to have children experience various reading opportunities through programs linking books in the library with their school curriculum. In addition, it provides book-reading programmes for both children and their parents in cooperation with local educational and cultural institutions. It has 30,000 books, 10,000 e-books and 1,600 audiovisual materials. The Agricultural Science Library, the Rural Development Administration of Korea The library, which is the only one of its kind in Korea, provides a variety of information to researchers at the Rural Development Administration and corporate research institutes, professors in the agricultural science field, and farmers. The collection of the library includes 210,000 books and 3,700 titles of academic journals. The library digitizes the full text related to the development of agricultural community projects and provides them to domestic and foreign users. As well, it has translated agriculture-related precious ancient books in Chinese characters translated into modern Korean and published more than ten books. It also plays the role of the FAO / AGRIS Korean mission. The new library building with the RFID system tracking books was constructed in 2005. KDI School of Public Policy and Management Library The KDI School was established in 1998. The school is closely affiliated with the Korea Development Institute, Korea's leading economic policy research institute. To assist in this end, the library collects extensive economic, business, policy, and government materials for the students and faculty at the KDI School. Housing both online and offline materials, the KDI School Library aims to be the best globalised library in Korea. With the comprehensive collection, competent staff, and a warm and friendly atmosphere surrounded by a beautiful forest, KDI School Library tries to be among the best in the country. Medical LibrariesUniversity of ULSAN ASAN Medical Library Established in 1989 along with Asan Medical Centre, ASAN Medical Library moved to a new building of 2,000 square meters in 2004. To support clinical and biomedical research, the library holds 18,000 books, 1,100 titles of medical journals, 5,000 titles of e-Journals, 15,000 e-Books, and audio-visual materials. It provides updated medical information via databases such as EMBASE and Ovid in the information retrieval room containing 500 CDs and DVDs. The library also provides "subject-based retrieval service" and responds to requests for retrieval of treatises published both inside and outside of Korea concerning issues discussed by faculties and medical professionals or their personal interests within 24 hours. The most satisfactory service for users is "One-Stop-Service" document delivery service, using the domestic and foreign document delivery service network. School LibrariesJungang Girl's High School Library The school was established in 1940. Opened in 1956, the library was remodeled in 2003 with financial aid from the government by being selected as a candidate school for a "School Library Promotion Project". It is currently operated by one teacher-librarian, one assistant librarian, student volunteers, and parent volunteers. It carries out "cooperative planning and teaching" via the Library-Assisted Instruction program, while encouraging parents to participate in book-reading activities. It has 25,000 books and 1,000 kinds of audiovisual materials. Shin Sung High School Dong-Chun Library The School is located at the hillside of Mt. Suri in Anyang. Opened in April 1998, its Dong-Chun Library is regarded as the best high school library in Korea in terms of the number of books and materials owned, facilities and frequencies of use. In addition to 60,000 books, periodicals and reference materials, it provides entertainment readings and various other materials, such as computer/Internet-related materials via its Information Material Centre, while operating a 900-seat reading room. As well, the esthetically pleasant building mingles nicely with its surroundings. At the same time, a variety of cultural events playing a role in the school library are held monthly, including a reading class for parents, reading quiz contest, special book exhibition, movie showing and short film festival. Songgok Women's High School Library The library aims to be a place for students and teachers to have peace of mind and enjoy reading books as freely as possible under the slogan of "an Open Library." A team of students takes turns operating the library voluntarily, giving assistance to the librarian who has to take care of the 330m² space. These student volunteers deliver students' wishes to the school headmaster and sometimes act as a channel between the school and neighboring residents concerning matters that should be settled through mutual cooperation. In addition to having 15,000 books and 3,000 audio-visual materials, the library provides one million full texts and 3,000 e-Books via its homepage. | |
