Appeal to IFLA World Library and Information Congress Participants

We look forward to your participation in the forthcoming congress in Durban.

Within our Federation an initiative has come up of using the annual congress to be of direct benefit to libraries in need in the host country. One of the ways in which this can be achieved is via a book donation project for public, school and hospital libraries.

We would like the IFLA congress 2007 in Durban to be the launch pad for this project. Hence we make this appeal to all delegates, exhibitors and speakers to bring with them one or more children's book(s) which we will receive during the congress and then distribute to relevant libraries with the help of committed South African colleagues.

Criteria:

  1. Books should be suitable for children up to the age of 14, and of high standard. In particular there is a demand for high quality picture books.
  2. They should be written in English or any of the other 11 official South African languages.
  3. They must be published in 2005 or later.
  4. Books must be brought to the International Convention Centre (ICC) in person and NOT shipped for collection or posted.
We will allocate an area in the ICC where books will be received by volunteers. A receipt will be issued.

All books will be marked with a name plate bearing the name of the congress and the donor prior to distribution. Distribution will take place as soon as possible after the congress.

We anticipate your enthusiasm and eagerness to participate in this new IFLA initiative, and thank you in advance.

Think about it! And many thanks on behalf of South African colleagues!
