Call for Papers

Genealogy and Local History Section

Theme: "Opening up our cultural heritage through digitisation and collaboration"

The Genealogy and Local History Section of the International Federation of Library Associations and Institutions (IFLA) invites proposals for papers in a 2-hour session to be presented at the World Library and Information Conference, Milan, Italy, 23-27 August 2009.

The Topic

There is great interest in using the new media to obtain information on genealogy and local history.

  • The UK BBC programme Who do you think you are?, launched in the UK in 2004, is an exceptionally popular programme which has encouraged many to uncover their own genealogy. The programme is also being syndicated in Canada, the US and Australia
  • Researchers can order genealogical information from archives, libraries and museums for use on their personal computers. Success here depends on the digitisation of genuine and reliable material presently hidden in these repositories
  • Chat-rooms, blogs, internet forums, Facebook and other Second Life Initiatives can be used to encourage family history studies – for example, the Union of Genealogy Groups claims to promote genealogy events in Second Life
  • New ways of presenting cultural heritage are developing and patrons can obtain local historical information on the spot through the use of mobile phones or Personal Digital Assistants (PDAs)

This list covers some aspects of opening up our cultural heritage. Proposals for papers on related subjects are very welcome.
