IFLA (The International Federation of Library Associations and Institutions) is the leading international body representing the interests of library and information services and their users. It is the global voice of the library and information profession. IFLA has several 'core activities', one of which is Action for Development through Libraries (ALP). The mission of ALP is to further the library profession, library institutions and library and information services in the developing countries of Africa, Asia and Oceania and Latin America and the Caribbean. In 2002 New Zealand hosted the first workshop for IFLA-ALP workshop at which six recipients of ALP scholarships were given a four-week introduction to Information Technology in libraries. Since then similar workshops have become an annual event. The theme of the workshops from 2003 onwards has been information literacy and IT applications related to information literacy education. These workshops give an opportunity for librarians and information workers in developing countries of the Asia-Oceania region to learn about the application of information and communication technologies in the context of information literacy education. In 2007 the Workshop focused on the pedagogy of information literacy education, information literacy programme development, delivery and evaluation, as well as the concepts and applications of Macromedia Dreamweaver, Fireworks, and Flash for effective delivery of information literacy programmes. Participants learned about the latest Macromedia products for designing websites and creating online information literacy activities. Each year scholarship applications are available on the IFLA Website, and must be received by IFLA in December for the Workshop to be held in the following year. There are also a limited number of fee-based places in each Workshop. |
