Twinning Between Libraries

Background

Building professional partnerships between libraries or between individuals can bring enormous benefits to both the staff involved in the partnership, and to the wider library. There is enormous enthusiasm for such twinning partnerships, but the good ideas behind the enthusiasm can be very difficult to put into practice.

The IFLA Core Programme for UAP maintained a Library Partnership Database from 1997 to 2000, supported by UNESCO as part of their earlier work on library twinning. While interest in the Database was high, the number of successful partnerships resulting from it was disappointing, and in September 2000, the decision was made to close the Database. This followed a successful workshop held during the IFLA General Conference in August 2000 in Jerusalem, at which alternative solutions were discussed, and presentations made on a number of successful initiatives in this area.

The IFLA Section on Science and Technology Libraries maintains a page at http://www.ifla.org/VII/s7/p1994/cooplib.htm which provides information on a wide range of other organisations and projects involved in building library networks, which may be able to help you identify a potential library partner.
