Section on Reference Work
68th IFLA Council and General Conference, in Glasgow, Scotland,18-24 August 2002

Theme: Globalization of Reference Services

The International Federation of Library Associations and Institutions (IFLA) will be meeting in Glasgow, Scotland, August 18 - 24 2002. As part of the conference, the Section on Reference Work is is planning an Open Session entitled:

"Globalization of Reference Services" with the following possible subthemes:

  • Cultural differences and reference work, e.g. origins and attitudes: training reference librarians for a pluralistic world/ sensitivity of reference librarians towards multicultural diversity
  • Reaching out to multicultural populations in reference work
  • New roles for reference librarians, e.g. comparison of different forms of reference work, reference work in different situations with different tools
  • Cooperation/collaboration of reference work e.g. how are reference services to be defined in a world of networked knowledge? What would "cooperative reference" look like?

If you are interested in presenting a paper on these topics, please send your proposal (title and brief synopsis with your name, affiliation and address, preferred in a Word or Word Perfect e-mail attachment, but fax or mail copies will be accepted) by December 31 to: Mrs. Bodil Wöhnert

Note: Mailed Copies should be postmarked by December 10, 2001.

A decision on speakers will be made by January 31, 2002.

On notification of acceptance, participants will be asked to send the completed paper in English or one of the four other recognized languages of IFLA - French, German, Russian or Spanish - to the person listed above no later than March 1. This will allow time for translation and publication in the Conference Proceedings.
