National Libraries in Turkey, Middle East and Central Asia: Past and Present
by ALTINAY SERNIKLI

Abstract:
The great civilizations of our world existed in the lands that extend from Istanbul to China, including the Middle East and Middle Asia. Historians confirm the existence and influence of Hellenistic, Assyrian, Turkish, Chinese and Arabic cultures on this vast land. The Silkroad was used to carry books, documents and information as well as libraries from Middle Asia to Africa and Europe between the 7th century BC to the 17th century AD. Today Turkey, its neighbors, and the Turkish Republics in Middle Asia own much of this accumulated knowledge. However, the formation and development of national libraries is different in each of these countries. It is therefore especially important to establish systems like the old Silkroad which will make it possible to share this accumulated knowledge with all nations from Middle Asia to Europe.
