Standing Committee and Section Membership

The Standing Committee has 13 members from 11 countries, plus two corresponding members and one special advisor. Section registration stands at 102. The Standing Committee set up a small Working Group (Larry Lempert (Sweden), Vidar Nordgaard (Norway), and Marielle de Miribel (France)) to conduct a membership drive.

Projects

Guidelines for Library Services for Young Adults

This year the Section has concentrated on the development of the young adult guidelines for service under the leadership of Ilona Glasshoff (Germany), Chair and her committee including Larry Lempert, Vidar Nordgaard, Marielle de Miribel, and Vivi Fahnoe. They have held several meetings in Europe, sent out questionnaires, and prepared a draft document. The 1994 Cuba IFLA Conference was the setting for an all-day workshop on young adult library services in multicultural and multilingual countries. An invitational seminar, hosted by Elga Cavadias, was held in Greece preceding the Istanbul Conference. A first draft of the Guidelines was circulated to all officers of the Division of Libraries Serving the General Public in April 1995; and a revised first draft was tabled during the Standing Committee meeting in Istanbul.

International Research Abstracts

Adele Fasick (USA) is continuing with this project, IRAYLS (International Research Abstracts: Youth Library Services). A prototype version is nw available on Internet through Gopher, in printed form, and on computer disk using the EndNote software. Ms Fasick is exploring the feasibility of producing the database in CDªROM format as well. A second edition of the database was available in Istanbul.

Eduction for Youth Library Services

This project was directed by Selma Richardson (USA), who left the Standing Committee in 1993; it is now being chaired by Barbara Immroth (USA). This is a project which has helped contribute to the Medium-Term Programme by the development of two sets of library service guidelines. A programme on this topic might be prepared for the Copenhagen Conference in 1997.

Children's Literature Abstracts

This is an ongoing project of the Section and includes sponsoring the publication of Children's Literature Abstracts, Gillian Adams of the USA serving as editor. The Section is investigating the possibility of making this publication available on the WWW and indexing it in the Universal Index.

Unesco Books for All Project

Since 1973 this joint project with Unesco has provided children and young people in developing countries with reading materials. It is directed by Lioba Betten (Germany), with an Advisory Committee composed of Molly Walsh (Canada), Mohd Sharif Mohd Saad, Geneviève Patte (France), Benedikte Kragh-Schwarz (Denmark), and Antoinette Correa (Senegal). The committee will standardize principles for the selection of recipients, and how much funding and for how long should be given to those selected. The committee will also look at fund-raising possibilities. During the report period Lioba Betten made an exhibition about libraries funded by the Books for All Programme. The exhibit will circulate among 55 German libraries.

Bologna Children's Book Fair

The Section also continues to put a great deal of time and effort into the sponsorship of a booth at the Bologna Children's Book Fair. In April 1995 Lioba Betten coordinated this activity. In 1995 the booth was visited by more than 300 persons from 18 countries. The Director of the Book Fair will provide the Section with a free booth for 1996.

Publications

Newsletter

During the report period one issue of the Section's newsletter, SCL News was published. It was edited by Mirielle de Maribel, past Secretary. In January 1995, No. 45 was issued by the new editor, Vivi Fahnoe, and included business affairs and communication of the Section as well as a summary of the Cuban Workshop on Young Adults, and an article by one of the Section's members, Durda Mesic (Croatia) on the Children's Library of Peace in Croatia.
