Strategic Plan
2008-2009
Mission
The Bibliography Section furthers universal bibliographic control (UBC) by promoting
standards and best practices in the production, content, arrangement, dissemination, and
preservation of bibliographic information related to the national output of each country.
In the context of UBC, the Section is particularly concerned with the work of national
bibliographic agencies in the digital era. The Section is also concerned with the promotion of the importance of national bibliographic data [the discipline of bibliography] to library professionals in all types of libraries; to publishers, distributors, and retailers; and to end-users. While taking full account of technological capabilities, the Section will ensure that its solutions are not necessarily dependent on particular technologies.
The Section closely associates its work and activities with that of other sections within the Division of Bibliographic Control. Where appropriate, the Section seeks ways to cooperate with divisions and sections beyond Division IV.
Goals
1. Extend the provision of universal bibliographic control
by advocating and
promoting the production of national bibliographies.

Actions
1.1 Maintain contact and exchange information with national bibliographic agencies worldwide
concerning national bibliographic information and services.
1.2 Plan and present a programme at the 2008 WLIC in Quebec on national bibliographies without borders.
1.3 Gather and update information on the status of national bibliographic control/national bibliography in North America.
1.4 Publicize and present at the WLIC in Quebec the draft Guidelines for agencies seeking guidance in national bibliographic work.
2. Establish outreach to national bibliographic agencies.

Actions
2.1 Exploit the Section’s
collaboration with other IFLA sections to extend outreach to national bibliographic
agencies.
2.2 Explore establishing a wiki
on the Section’s home page for sharing information with national bibliographic
agencies.
2.3 Post short articles,
bibliographic terms, and other relevant information on the Section’s home page
for the use of national bibliographic agencies.
2.4 Ensure that the Section’s
written documents, presentations, and other products are translated into as
many of IFLA’s seven official languages as possible.
3. Publicize the work of the Section

Actions
3.1 Publish in a timely manner Section minutes,
plans, reports, and other documents on the homepage of the Section. Where
appropriate, also issue documents will in printed form.
3.2 Publish two issues of the Section Newsletter
each year, focussing on the ongoing activities of the Section and reports/news
from national bibliographic agencies worldwide.
4. Promote membership in the Section and extend the
geographic scope of representation on the Standing Committee

Actions
4.1
Contact national bibliographic agencies
currently not members of the Section.
4.2
Prepare a special package of material related to the work of the Section
to be shared with prospective new members.
4.3
Send the special Section package to the new group of African national
libraries group that is being organized by John Tribe, national librarian of South Africa.
4.4
Prepare a letter from the Section that can be used by members in various
local journals, websites, and other venues to advertise the work of the
Section.
