Newsletter of the Section on Bibliography

July 1999

Dear colleagues,

As usual the July edition of our Newsletter deals mainly with the approaching annual IFLA Conference which this year will be held in Bangkok, Thailand from August 20. - 28.

There will be a diverse and informative program and I hope a lot of our readers will have the opportunity to attend the this years conference.

Standing Committee of the Section on Bibliography

The Standing Committee will meet twice during the IFLA Conference, as usual:

Saturday, 21 August 12:00 - 14:50 (room to be determined)
Friday, 27 August 08:30 - 10:20 (room to be determined)

As I already said in the last Newsletter 1999 its an election year and we have now 16 members in the Section. I am pleased to welcome all new members of the Standing Committee as they are Ms. Guity Aryan, Ms. Maria Patrizia Calabresi, Ms. Pilar Dominguez Sànchez (who previously was a corresponding member), Mr. Talbott Huey, Ms. Sumana C. Jayasuriya, Ms. Unni Knutsen, Ms. M.M.M. Snyman and Ms. Eva Tedenmyr. All newcomers got meanwhile an information package and they are, I am sure, familiar with the section.

At the same time we must say good bye to Mrs. Barbara L. Bell, Mr. Matjaz Hocevar, Mrs. Anne M. Hasund Langballe, Mrs. Gunilla Larsson and M. Rajabi. I really want to thank them all for their input and dedication to our bibliographic field of work. It has been always a pleasure to work with you and share your knowledge. Thank you!

As usual in election years election of officers for the committee will be held during the conference in August. The present officers are Werner Stepahn (chair) and Francoise Bourdon (Secretary). Werner is eligible for re-election for a further two-year period, but Francoise Bourdon told, that, due to other duties, she will be ending her mandate as secretary of the committee. Francoise let me take this opportunity and place to thank you warmly on behalf of all the Standing Committee for all your work which you have done for the SC and in promoting bibliographic activities; not only in the last two years but also in previous years. It has been a wonderfull experience to cooperate and share your friendship during this time. But anyway Francoise will stay with us as member of the SC.

Nominations for office holders schould be sent to the Chair only by members of the SC not later than August 13th 1999, so as to ensure that those not attending the Bangkok Conference have the opportunity to nominate candidates.

SC Open Program Session

SC Open Program Session will be held on Tuesday, 24 August from 15:30 - 17:50.

The theme of the session will be: Bibliographic Developments: Trends and Perspectives.

Three speakers will present results from discussions, world wide and focussed to the South East Asian respective Australian area.

  • Mona Madsen (Royal School of Library and Information Science, Copenhagen, Denmark): Results from ICNBS
  • Peter Haddad (National Library of Australia, Canberra, Australia): National bibliography in Australia: Moving into the next millenium and hopefully
  • Chirudee Pungtrakul (Bangkok, Thailand): The bibliographic situation in Thailand

Bibliography members are working hard to have copies and translation of at least two papers available at the Conference in all official languages. Several papers are already available on IFLANET. Special thanks for preparing that to our Information Officer Kirsten Waneck.

Workshop

Thursday, 26 August, 09:00 - 13:00 (room to be determined)

The Section will have a joint halfday workshop together with the Section of National Libraries on „Electronic Publications and (National) Bibliographies". There are some slide changes in the programm of the workshop. Winston Tabb (LC) will be my co-chair and I hope the programme sounds interesting enough, so that all places will be occupied. This year there is no pro-registration for workshops. In our case participation will be limited to 50 persons, but participants will be allowed on a first-come, first-served basis. Some of the papers are already available in IFLANET , we hope to get them all in the net. But the event really will be interesting if you as participant take part in a lively discussion, so please be prepared to tell us something how you handle in your home country bibliographic control of electronic publications.

Other meetings

I want to draw your attention to the Open Forum of the Division of Bibliographic Control which will be held on Monday, 23 August from 09:00 - 10:25. The meeeting provides updates on the work of the Division and its Sections, and on various international bibliographic control standards, products and projects. This session is always very informative, especially for newcomers.

It is planned to have a social event after the session, it will be a joint coffee/tea of the three sections which will give our members the oportunity to become acquainted with the members of the other sections. So please use this offer to learn more about the Sections and your colleagues.

International Conference on National Bibliographic Services (ICNBS), Copenhagen, 25 - 27 November 1998

In the last issue of this newsletter it was reported already that the ICNBS has been very successful. Even when this means that throughout the recommendations will break down some work to the SC on Bibliography. This will be discussed in Bangkok. Papers are accessible at: http://www.ifla.org/VI/3/icnbs/icnbs.htm. The new recommendations are posted at: http://www.ifla.org/VI/3/icnbs/fina.htm. For further discussions it would be helpful to read at least the recommendations which are also related to MTP Action Plan.

Contributions to this Newsletter are welcome at any time. Please send news items, articles, comments to the Editor.
