Cataloguing Section

International Cataloguing Code

IME ICC

Goal number 1 of the 2006-2007 Strategic Plan of the Cataloguing Section is "to promote the development of an international cataloguing code for bibliographic description and access".

This goal will be achieved through a series of IFLA Meetings of Experts on an International Cataloguing Code (IME ICC), in charge of the definition of new International Cataloguing Principles to replace the "Paris Principles."

This series of meetings took place from 2003 to 2007. The first one took place in Frankfurt on July 28-30, 2003, for Europe and the Anglo-American rule makers; it resulted in Draft Principles, and the proceedings of that first meeting have been published as volume 26 in the IFLA Series on Bibliographic Control.

The second one took place in Buenos Aires on August 16-17, 2004, for Latin America and the Caribbean and was reported on by Barbara Tillett during the 70th IFLA General Conference and Council. It resulted in a revised draft. Its proceedings in English and Spanish were published as volume 28 in the IFLA Series on Bibliographic Control.

The third one took place in Cairo, Egypt, on December 12-14, 2005 , for the Arabic-speaking Middle East and was reported on by Barbara Tillett during the 72nd IFLA General Conference and Council. The Draft Principles were revised again in April 2006, and the proceedings in Arabic and English were published as volume 29 in the IFLA Series on Bibliographic Control.

The fourth one took place in Seoul, South Korea, on August 16-18, 2006, for the Asian countries and was reported on by Barbara Tillett during the 72nd IFLA General Conference and Council. Additional revisions of the draft of the Principles document were recommended and are being considered by all previous IME ICC participants; its proceedings were published in Chinese, English, Japanese and Korean as volume 32 in the IFLA Series on Bibliographic Control.

The fifth and last one took place in Pretoria, South Africa, on August 14-15, 2007, for the cataloguing experts in the sub-Saharan African countries. It was reported on by Barbara Tillett during the 73rd IFLA General Conference and Council. Additional revisions of the draft of the Principles document were recommended and are being considered by all previous IME ICC participants; its proceedings were published in English, French, and Portuguese as volume 35 in the IFLA Series on Bibliographic Control.
