Annual Report 2000-2001

Scope statement

The Section is concerned with the preservation of the world's documentary heritage. It provides an international forum for all types of libraries to exchange, develop and disseminate knowledge and experience dealing with theories, policies and practices for the preservation of all recorded knowledge, regardless of the storage medium. The Section maintains a close working relationship with the IFLA PAC Core Activity.

Meetings

August 2000, Jerusalem, Israel. Attended by 13 of the 18 members of the Standing Committee and by 9 observers. The Committee discussed conference and project activities for the next two conferences (Boston 2001 and Glasgow 2002) and other activities concerned with fulfilling its Action Plan for 2000-2001.

Projects

The Section has no projects currently funded by IFLA.

Publications

The Section continues to publish its Newsletter (ISSN 1028-3714). Issue 11 appeared in July 2001 with a full account of the Section's activities at the 2000 Jerusalem Conference and an obituary for Maria Skepastianu, former Secretary of the Standing Committee from 1997 to 2000.

Collecting and safeguarding the oral tradition: report of an international conference held at Khon Kaen, August 1999, edited by John McIlwaine and Jean Whiffin. The Hague, IFLA, 2000. (IFLA Professional Reports, 68). This was later withdrawn from the Professional Reports series and re-published, München, IFLA Saur, 2001. (IFLA Publications 95)

Open Session, Boston 2001

Theme: "Managing digital collections as research collections", August 22nd. Over 250 delegates attended.

    Shared challenges in a networked cultural space by Daniel GREENSTEIN (Director, Digital Library Federation, Council on Library and Information Resources, Washington, U.S.A.)

    Artifacts and digital collections by Stephen G. NICHOLS (Chair, Task Force on the Role of the Artifact in Library Collections, Johns Hopkins University, Baltimore, U.S.A.)

    Preserving digital collections by Titia van der WERF (Coordinator of Electronic and Digital Archives, National Electronic Depository, Koninklijke Bibliotheek, The Hague, Netherlands)

    Technical data and preservation needs by Catherine LUPOVICI (Head, Digital Library Department, Bibliothèque nationale de France, Paris, France)

Workshop, Boston 2001

Theme: "Preservation and digitisation: natural partners?" Held jointly with the Section on Information Technology. Chaired by Nancy GWINN and Tom GARNETT (Smithsonian Institution) as a facilitated discussion based upon a previously circulated survey. Completed by 22 institutions in 13 countries, an analysis of the survey was available to all participants. Attended by over 150 delegates, with over 30 making contributions from the floor.

Guest Lecture, Boston 2001: "Preservation in the U.S.A.: a case study in cooperation" by Deanna MARCUM and George FARR (Council on Library and Information Resources). The Section was associated with hosting this.

Visits and demonstrations, Boston 2001. Organized by Committee member Sonia JORDAN (Chicago Public Libraries) members of the Standing Committee visited two conservation laboratories at Harvard University, the workshops of the Acme Bookbinding Corporation and the Northeast Document Conservation Center. They were also the guests of a reception at the Boston Public Library jointly hosted by the Library and by the Northeast Document Conservation Center.

Relationships with other Bodies

The Section maintains a close working relationship with the IFLA Core Activity for Preservation and Conservation and liaises with other organizations involved in international preservation activities, including the European Commission on Preservation and Access and the Council on Library and Information Resources. In January 2001 IFLA and the International Council on Archives signed a contract with UNESCO to produce a set of "Guidelines for digitization in libraries and archives". On the Working group compiling these the Chair and Clemens de WOLF represented the Section.
