Annual Report 1996-1997

Scope statement

The Section is concerned with the preservation of the world's documentary heritage. It provides an international forum for all types of libraries to exchange, develop and disseminate knowledge and experience dealing with theories, policies and practices for the preservation of all recorded knowledge, regardless of the storage medium. The Section maintains a close working relationship with the IFLA PAC Core Programme.

Meetings

August/September 1997, Copenhagen, Denmark. In addition to discussing conference and project activities for the next two conferences, the Standing Committee completed its contribution to the new IFLA Medium Term Programme. An activity of particular concern to the Section is the Programme of the 1999 Pre-Session Seminar which will deal with the preservation of the oral tradition.

Projects

The Section has no active projects currently funded by IFLA.

UNESCO Resolution on Permanent Paper: The Section played an active role in the development and promotion of a draft resolution on permanent paper. The resolution was passed by UNESCO at its General Conference in November 1997.

Relationships with other Bodies

The Section maintains a close working relationship with the IFLA Core Programme for Preservation and Conservation. Liaison is also maintained with other organizations involved in international preservation activities, including the European Commission on Preservation and Access.
