Medium Term Programme 1998-2001
Scope statement
The Section aims to promote the compilation and use of statistics both in the successful management and operation of libraries and in the demonstration of the value of libraries outside the profession. It is concerned with the definition, standardisation, collection, analysis, interpretation, publication and use of statistical data from all types of library and information service activity -- including statistics of technically innovative services. Case studies of good practice and international benchmark comparisons are within its scope as is collaboration with international agencies such as Unesco and ISO.
Goals, 1998-2001 - Action Plans, 1998-1999
- Goal 1
Encourage libraries to collect standard statistical data, and to encourage UNESCO efforts to provide statistical information for meaningful comparisons of libraries world-wide.
- Action:
- 1.1 Remain in contact with UNESCO officials to review problems in completeness of UNESCO statistics.
- Goal 2
Encourage best practice in all aspects of statistical work.
- Actions:
- 2.1 Liaise with ISO over revision of ISO 2789.
- 2.2 Establish an e-mail Discussion Group for LIS statistical experts.
- 2.3 Continue BROWSING SESSIONS at annual conferences.
- 2.4 Publicise current research and international bench marking exercises.
- Goal 3
Facilitate international communication between those interested in statistics.
- Action:
- 3.1 Increase publicity for international statistics through a Web page, IFLA Journal news section, and other media. The Web site will include pointers to other statistical sites .
- Goal 4
Support the development of Performance Measures and statistics required for new methods of management, funding and economic factors
- Action:
- 4.1 Identify a few items of performance measurement for particular attention on a cross country basis.
- Goal 5
Support the development of appropriate statistics to report the provision and use of electronic documents and services.
- Action:
- 5.1 Support and publicise efforts to develop and establish statistics appropriate to electronic text and services.
