SCOPE STATEMENT |
The Section focuses on education and training for LIS professionals based on research and professional practice. It serves library and information science (LIS) educators, practitioners, and managers with training responsibilities. Appropriately educated, adequately trained, continually learning processionals are a requirement for effective and efficient information services. Education and training for library and information services concerns all IFLA's divisions and requires cooperation with them and other international and inter-regional associations who have a related mission. Of special interest to the Section is the state of LIS education and training in developing countries. |

- foster international cooperation on basic and continuing education of library and information science (LIS) educators and practitioners
- uphold the professional status of LIS personnel through internationally recognized qualifications for LIS work
- maintain a current directory of world-wide LIS educational programs
- foster the multicultural principles of IFLA, though contribution to the current multilingual lexicon for LIS
- offer professional development opportunities for LIS professionals and educators in developing countries
- disseminate information on innovative curriculum developments and creative teaching methodologies and materials
- foster new professional development opportunities in order to encourage new knowledge, skills and competencies.

| MEETINGS |
- Guidelines for Library and Information Studies Education: Revision of 1975 standards. Lead members: Evelyn Daniel; Ole Harbo; Susan Lazinger. Final revisions presented to open forum, revisions made, approved by the Section and presented to the Coordinating Board for endorsement and forwarding to the Professional Board. Completed.
- Worldwide Database of Library and Information Studies Professional Qualifications and Accrediting Bodies. Lead member: Judith Elkin. Report presented to open forum. Report filed with Coordinating Board. Completed.
- World Guide to Library, Archive and Information Studies Education. Lead members: Evelyn Daniel and John Harvey. Proposal developed with Section. Initial meetings held with IFLA leadership and publishers. Funding being sought from IFLA and K. G. Saur.
- Multilingual Glossary. Leader (former) member: Steffan Ruckl. Last report indicated that 52,000 terms had been collected. No response from former member despite repeated attempts. Project abandoned.
- History of the Section. Lead members: Russell Bowden and Ole Harbo. In progress. Report scheduled for 2001,
- Other Projects:
- procedures for refereed papers [Elkin]. Completed.
- membership development leaflet [Nicholson]. In progress. Completion for 2001.
- criteria for Co-sponsorship of IFLA Programs [Nicholson]. In progress. Completion for 2001.
- conference planning. Subcommittees established for 2001, 2002 and 2003.
