Meetings
The Standing Committee met once during the Glasgow conference. Six members and three visitors attended the meeting. The Chair was absent due to illness, and one member had resigned during the year. JoAnne Boorkman from the University of California, Davis and Becky Lyon of the National Library of Medicine (U.S.) were in attendance. JoAnne Boorkman served as Secretary at the meeting as Rick Forsman stood in for the Chair.
Goals
Significant progress was made on the Section's strategic goals. The Professional Board approved the name change to Health and Biosciences Libraries Section. A successful program on the topic 'Expanding the Scope of the Virtual Health Library' was held in Glasgow with over 100 attendees. The strategic goal concerning accessibility and affordability of health related journals has been modified to read: "Identify and endorse appropriate guidelines and position statements defining the need for accessible health information with a cost structure that is affordable and that employs fair licensing principles." SC members Arne Jakobsson and Ingegerd Rabow will lead action of achievement of this goal. The action plan for the coming year for the strategic goal to increase communication between librarians interested in health and biosciences will focus on the recruitment of new standing committee members in 2003 including representation of the World Health Organization and the National Library of Medicine. JoAnne Boorkman will draft articles for relevant listserves and newsletters promoting the Section. A recruitment letter for new standing committee members will also be sent to all Section members. Expanding section involvement in IFLA projects, Rick Forsman became a liaison to the Publisher Relations Advisory Committee and Hilda Nassar will be liaison to Division VIII.
Publications
Lucretia McClure, Newsletter editor, produced three issues of the newsletter via IFLANET. INSPEL published eight papers submitted by the Section from the International Congress on Medical Librarianship and the IFLA conference, both held in 2000.
Conference
The Section sponsored an Open Session on the topic of 'Expanding the Scope of the Virtual Library.' The Section will co-sponsor an open session on 'Bioinformatics' with the Science and Technology Libraries Section for the Berlin conference. The Buenos Aires conference program will be planned with input from BIREME and the National Library of Medicine (USA).
