Section of Biological and Medical Sciences Libraries

Medium Term Programme 1998-2001

Scope

The Section of Biological and Medical Sciences Libraries represents and acts as a forum for special libraries concerned with all aspects of information dissemination and services in relation to the health sciences and biological sciences..

Objectives

The Section's general aims include the promotion of cooperation between biological and health sciences libraries; the facilitating of the development and application of new technology relevant to those libraries; the possible consideration of means for better provision for health care information to health care consumers; the promotion of cooperative activity between national and international library associations of biological and medical sciences libraries and the promotion of cooperation with the World Health Organization (WHO, FID) and other relevant international bodies.

Goals for 1998-2001

  1. Coordination for the planning of the International Congress of Medical Librarianship (ICML).
A subcommittee distributed a call for sites, answered 10 letters of intent and reviewed three completed bid books. The committee selected a site for the 2005 ICML which will be announced next year at the 8th ICML in London.
  2. The pursue of the electronic publication of the Section Newsletter via IFLANET.
Special consideration will focus on assuring that the Newsletter is reaching electronically or otherwise as broad a readership as possible. Communication was broken with the editor and the reestablishment of this newsletter will be a priority in this two year period.
  3. The revision, as may deemed necessary, of the Section Membership Information Brochure, both electronically and in print, in English and French.
The brochure has been translated into French and Spanish. It will be produced in those languages next year.
  4. Expansion of the membership of the Section.
Articles were written for the EAHIL newsletter and the MLA News. A campaign to contact all IFLA members asking for their membership in this section will begin this year.
  5. To encourage young librarians with leadership potential
No work has been done on this goal. Personal communications between members and local librarians has begun to bear abstracts and papers for the section. The 8th ICML planning committees do have funds for young librarians to attend.
  6. New version of a Health Sciences Libraries Directory
The standing committee felt that a complete directory was too ambitious a project to attempt. A subcommittee did survey IFLA members and produced a list of worldwide directories in the health sciences. It is planned that this list will be formatted and available on IFLANET.
