Istanbul Meetings

Pre-Conference Seminar

The pre-session seminar, a satellite meeting to the 1995 IFLA Conference, took place in Ankara, and was concerned with influencing decision-makers. The Round Table was responsible for the programme of the seminar. The delegates decided that there should be two outcomes. The first will be the preparation of a handbook of case studiesof projects and programmes that have affected development. The second is the organization of similar workshops on a regional basis for which a syllabus is being prepared.

Open Session

A very well-attended session on "Marketing" was organized by Marielle de Miribel (France) and Christiana Tovoté (France), who had organized the translation of the papers into English and French. The large room allocated was filled to overflowing, thus evidencing the keen interest in management issues.

Workshop

Maureen Sullivan organized the successful workshop on "Managing Change",which also had received more registrations than expected.

Reflection of the Improvements in Modern Marketing Understanding on the Public Libraries in Turkey
by NESLIHAN URAZ

Abstract: The meaning and importance of marketing as a concept, as well as the chain constituted by the common marketing activities have currently been understood much better. In addition, these activities have taken their well-deserved place within the service sector, beside the market formed solely by tangible products. However, one can hardly say that the opportunities offered by marketing activities are being made use of in solving problems experienced by the public libraries in Turkey relating to personnel, buildings, collections, readers, etc. The main reason is that in Turkey, classified as a developing country, public libraries are beginning to be considered as "enterprises". This paper puts forward the grounds for the necessity of understanding the meaning and importance of modern marketing activities and also the need for making use of modern marketing concepts in public library services in Turkey.
