Current Awareness Service

The review of the general literature of management was completed early in the year and is in the hands of IFLA HQ. It is hoped that it will be included in the next issue of Ifla Journal. The intention of the series of articles has been to examine trends in the general field of management, and draw attention to interesting papers, recognising that it is difficult to scan the volume of published material. The future of this initiative will be reviewed in Amsterdam. Feedback will be appreciated: have you read the articles, have they been useful, should they be divided into sub-fields e.g. marketing, human resource management etc.? Should they try and cover articles in languages other than English - and if so, would you be prepared to make an input? It is expected that the section’s website will be operational later this year. We could provide a current awareness service using the website and back this up by publication in print. Feedback to the Secretary before Amsterdam will be welcome so that a discussion paper can be prepared. Deadline 1 August.

New Projects and Offers of Papers for Bangkok in 1999

Decisions will be made in Amsterdam about new projects. Small amounts of funding are available from the Divisional or Professional Board for projects. Proposals will be examined by the Stranding Committee and forwarded to the Divisional Board. If you have an idea to put forward, you should prepare a short description giving your name and affiliation, the title of the project, the methods to be used to gather data/information, outcomes, and timescale and estimated costs. Please send this to the Secretary by 1st August. The theme for the Open Meeting in Bangkok is ‘Managing diversity with users and staff’. Offers of papers to the Secretary by 1st August together with a short abstract. This is particularly important if you plan to be in Bangkok rather than Amsterdam. The Section would like to have offers from members in the region. The theme for the Open Meeting to be held in Israel in 2000 will be discussed in Amsterdam. Please send any ideas to the Secretary by 1st August.

News from IFLA HQ and the Chair of the Division

Sjoerd Koopman is the new Co-ordinator of Professional Activities replacing Winston Roberts who has left HQ. Following the criticism of the SI services at the last conference, a training session will be held with the interpreters, and an evaluation will take place during the Amsterdam conference. Criteria are being developed for poster sessions. The quality of submissions for the Contributed paper sessions was said to be ‘rather poor’ and only 4 have been accepted for 1998. The PB will discuss the matter in December. An Internet café will be available in Amsterdam. The registration fees for Bangkok have been reduced - USD 350 for early and USD 425 for late, and the site is now BITEC (Bangkok International Trade and Exhibition Centre). A new Discussion Group on Performance Measurement and Public Libraries has been set up. The IFLA website is to be redesigned.
