   
Section on Management and Marketing
Achievements 1997-1999
With the support of the Professional Board, the Chair of the Co-ordinating Board, IFLA Headquarters staff, together with teamwork by members of the Standing Committee, the following achievements can be recorded.
Administrative
- Transition from a Round Table to a Section.
- Linkage of the Discussion Group on Friends and Advocates of Libraries Discussion Group with the new Section.
- Membership of the Section its first year totaled 74.
Project funding
Funding has been received from the Professional Board for:
- A series of workshops on marketing and the preparation of a publication arising from the workshops.
Funding has been received from the Co-Ordinating Board for projects on:
- Outsourcing library services (completed and paper presented in Copenhagen)
- Preparation of a report on the Ankara pre-conference and editing of papers (completed)
- Preparation of a management toolkit (completed and published)
- Preparation of a workshop on Strategic Planning and the Modernization of Services (completed and held in Amsterdam).
- Evaluation and follow up to a mini course in marketing (completed and paper presented in Amsterdam).
- The preparation of a draft glossary on marketing (completed)
- Preparation of 'Change management: a global perspective' which will draw together examples of change.
- Translation of the glossary of marketing terms into the IFLA languages
- 'Keynote papers in marketing'
- Review of the general management literature 1998 (completed and in press)
Publications
- The Round Table, and now the Section, has prepared an annual review of the literature of general management for each year from 1994-1998 which has been published in IFLA Journal at the start of the following year.

Workshops
- Three workshops on marketing have been presented at successive IFLA Conferences 1996-8 which have been so popular that people have had to be turned away.
- A workshop on Advancing the Librarian's Role in the New Information Economy was held in Copenhagen in conjunction with the Round Table on the Management of Library Associations.
- Other workshops held in Amsterdam were Strategic Planning and the Modernization of Services and Analyzing Our marketing Efforts
- A two-day workshop on Marketing Your Library will be held in Bangkok preceding the IFLA Conference in co-operation with The Department of Library and Information Science at Srinakharinwirot University.
- Workshops on Performance Measures and Marketing, and Strategic Management and Public Policy will be offered in Bangkok
- Workshops on Change Management and Building Skills for the Information Age (Joint with Section on IT) and New Technologies to Assist Marketing are being organized for 2000.
Open Meetings
- The Open Meetings have attracted good numbers, and new members of the SC have emerged as a result of discussion that has taken place after the papers.
- The themes for the meetings have been:

1999 - Managing Diversities with Multicultural Users and
Different Staff (Joint with Section on Multicultural Populations)
For 2000 - Change Management and Changing Organizations
- The meetings organized by the Discussion Group have attracted excellent audiences.
International seminar involvement
- The Section was pleased to be associated with the Pre-conference held in Ankara in 1996 on Influencing the Decision-makers: Impact Strategies for Libraries in Developing Countries.
- The Section was represented at the workshop on "The Management and Use of Human Resources in Latin America" by Ian Johnson and Michael Koenig, held in Valparaiso, Chile in April 1998.
- A bilingual scientific colloquium "Management and Marketing of Information Systems and Services in Africa: Apply, Adapt or Reinvent" was organized by Yawo Assibley and Rejean Savard at Ouagadougou, Burkina Faso in January 1999
Co-operation with other Sections
- The Section co-operates with other groups within IFLA and external bodies to demonstrate its view that management pervades all of the activities of IFLA.
