Round Table on Audiovisual and Multimedia
Meetings in Jerusalem
As usual, the Standing Committee met twice during the IFLA Conference: Saturday, 12 August 11h30 - 14h20 and Friday, 18 August 8h00-10h15.
Participants: Bibbi Andersson, Monika Cremer, Graciela Dacosta, Pierre-Yves Duchemin, Joelle Garcia (chair), Martin Kesselmann, Nieves Iglesias, Ludmilla Levykina, Mircea Regneala.
1. Welcome
The chair Joelle Garcia welcomes the present members. As Bibbi Andersson has to withdraw from her funtions as secretary (due to her new workingplace functions), Monika Cremer will take over the task until the elections in Boston and has been approved by theStanding Committee.
2. Approval of the minutes of Bangkok meetings.
The minutes of the Bangkok meetings have been approved.
3. Financial report
Up to now there have been only expenses for the English version of the Newsletter. As the person from Israel contributing to the workshop on Thursday (Marilyn Koolik) is not an IFLA member, the Section has to pay the entrance fee for her (US$ 125).
With the production costs of the Spanish and French version of the Section flyer the administrative fund for this year will be spent. Joelle Garcia will try to have the production done by the BnF, which will take over also the delivery.
Monika Cremer will try to produce a German version without costs for the Section (probably 200 copies). A Russian version could yet not be realized, as the contacts with Ludmilla Levykina have been difficult due to transmittance problems.
Bibbi Andersson could not continue her work for the "Guidelines for Audiovisual and Multimedia Services in Libraries", because ofthe change of working place. The Section will ask for a continuation of the project which will be done without Bibbi Andersson, as she cannot continue her work for the Section on Audiovisual and Multimedia.
Graciela Dacosta will continue the project "A survey on legal deposit and copyright in Spanish speaking countries".and sent a bill about the costs to Joelle Garcia.
3. Reports from the Professional Board and division meetings
IFLA wants to raise the quality standard of the annual conference. The papers should be submitted earlier to be evaluated by working groups. There should be more time for discussion of the papers. Open Sessions should present "hot topics" to be then discussed. The meetings should be more informal, thus helping to come to discussions. Workshops should be for learning, doing exercises and to discuss and not only present conference papers.
Sometimes discussions become difficult as there are often no simultaneous translations possible for Open Sessions.
The funding of underdeveloped countries is a problem for IFLA. The funding should be more visible to have an easier approach. Up to now funding was only for 1 year and the person coult not continue its IFLA activities later on. The proposal is to give funds for a person for 4 years instead of 4 people for 1 year only.
5. Section report
The section report can be found in the Newsletter (see also homepage of the Section)

The audience of this workshop was less than 50 persons, partly due to the library excursions and the excursion to Bethlehem.
The Section has been present at the IFLA booth on Thursday, 17-18 p.m., surely not the best time to attract interested people.
7. Boston conference plans
It is planned to have an Open Session in conjunction with the Section on Information Technology on « New technologies for access to moving images ».
The workshop should be off-site (Harvard or MIT?) about " Moving images and digital libraries".
There shall be also an Open Forum for the discussion of the "Guidelines-draft", if ever possible after the Open Session on Tuesday.
Pierre-Yves Duchemin will do the call for papers for the Open Session and Martin Kesselmann for the Workshop on several mailing lists to ensure a broad information.
8. Glasgow conference plans
As there will be elections in Boston for the officers of the Section, it is not easy to make plans for the new group already yet.
The "Guidelines" should be ready at this time, as well as the "Survey on legal deposit in Spanish speaking countries" and could be presented.
The Section should look to get English participants for Glasgow.
9. Projects
"Guidelines for Audiovisual and Multimedia Services in Libraries"
Bibbi Andersson cannot continue within the working group (Martin Kesselmann, Graciela Dacosta, Mirceal Regneala). She will send the actual papers in September to Joelle Garcia, Monika Cremer and the working group to prepare a draft version for Boston. Martin Kesselmann will reflect to take over the leadership for the project.
"A survey on legal deposit and copyright in Spanish speaking countries" (Graciela Dacosta, Nieves Iglesias), both will work further on this project.
The interim meeting of the Section well be held in Paris (BnF) the 29th and 30th of January 2001, with special focus on the projects.
10. Medium Term Program 1998-2001
Actions 1.4 and 4.1 and 5.1 are finished and should be removed from the program.
Instead of this should be added 4.1 Open session (Boston) and 4.2 Workshop (Boston).
11. Other business
Lia Koffler (Head of Media Dept., Univ. Library, Mount Carmen, Haifa) wants to become a member.
The Section on Audiovisual and Multimedia has now 33 IFLA members.
The homepage of the sections has been visited 3,222 times from July 1999 to June 2000.
The mailing list has 42 participants (one new since Jerusalem).
