"Mobile Libraries the road to learning from womb to tomb"
Mission
The section promotes and develops mobile library activities worldwide, particularly in those countries, which have few or no mobile libraries. It promotes equality and access to innovative services; and fosters awareness of the importance, value and special nature of mobile library services by furthering the knowledge of them, by raising awareness within the library community about the special nature of mobile services. It encourages the use of mobile libraries to meet the needs of disadvantaged members of the communities, and by undertaking programs to foster international understanding of the role of mobile libraries.
Goals
1. To promote the importance and value of mobile library services for effective equity of access to information, education, research, recreation, and cultural inspiration.

Actions
1.1 Collect, evaluate and disseminate current research regarding development in mobile library services.
2. To collect, assess, and disseminate information worldwide on best practices in mobile library services.

2.1 Investigate best practices in mobile library services for physically challenged

3. To promote regional, national, and international initiatives to improve/create literacy and library services via mobile libraries.

3.1 Research, write and present papers related to the use of mobile libraries to improve literacy and library services
3.2 Represent IFLA Mobile Libraries Section at Conferences, workshops, seminars, project development, projects and initiatives
3.3 Work with appropriate organizations, institutions, agencies and foundations to bring support for projects of the Section and collaborating organizations, sections, and round tables
3.4 Promote the Section as a cost effective, flexible and innovative way of providing library services for literacy and lifelong learning
3.5 Encourage international, national, regional, and local seminars, workshops, conferences, and projects
3.6 Liaise with conference organizers and Library Associations to provide national conferences on mobile libraries with international content
4. To encourage and contribute to the use of indigenous initiatives to provide and disseminate information, education, and culture

4.1 Design and conduct workshops/seminars on creative authorship by library users or all ages and all segments of the population
5. To develop local indigenous content through local, regional, national, and international authorship among all segments of the population in all regions

6. To promote the work of the Round Table through anniversary celebrations

7. To promote international guidelines and standards for mobile libraries in a technological environment

8. To provide professional advice on the establishment and development of mobile library services

9. To promote the use of mobile libraries in cross-types of library initiatives in the provision of access to information, education, and culture for lifelong learning

9.1 Conduct/cosponsor a regional seminar on the use of mobile libraries to provide access to information, education, and culture for lifelong learning
10. Advocate the use of mobile libraries to serve the needs of special populations such as women, families, indigenous peoples, unemployed, elderly, school dropouts, school leavers, home schoolers, and minority groups

10.1 Provide and participate in regional, national, and/or international programs on mobile library services, or programs that provide opportunities for networking towards the development of mobile library services

- Section presented Poster section at Berlin Conference
- Newsletters posted on IFLANET in designated area for section
- Poster on the History of Mobile Libraries updated
- Update on the Nigerian Feasibility study presented as part of section's program in Berlin. Study funded by IFLA
- Justifications to support continuing or starting Mobile Libraries Service presented as part of section's program in Berlin
- Update and Revision of the Annotated Bibliography begun with completion scheduled for December 2003
- Presentation given on latest trends in mobile library services in Sweden at Berlin Conference
- From 17 observers to committee meetings in Berlin develop two proposals for funding

- Encourge participation of Mobile Libraries in Poster Sessions
- Planning continues for 2005 Mobilemeet in Oslo
- Argentina program very successful speakers from Portugal, Argentina, South African, England and Norway 63 people attended program
- Two programs in Dublin and Belfast Ireland
- Nigerian Feasibility Study site visit completed
- Continue to seek organizations to translate Argentina presentations to Spanish and English
- Recruit new members
- Have information on section distribute to members of the ALA discussion group on Mobile Libraries
- Seek outside funding for Caterpillar, Zimbabwe and Nigeria Projects
- Initial Planning for Anniversary of Mobile Libraries representation at IFLA
- Revised Annotated Bibliography, 1980-2004 is completed
- Two successful meetings on caterpillar project were held in Ireland and Argentina. Currently specifications are being provided to build a prototype of shelving
- Call for papers will be issues for the conference programs in Oslo and Seoul.
