Projects
- A new brochure for the section was completed. It will now be
translated into the official languages of IFLA.
- The Section has completed setting up the listserv for standing
committee members to facilitate communication. It also has set up a
monitored listserv for government libraries worldwide which will be a
forum for discussion of common interests, questions, new projects, etc.
Both of these listservs will be widely publicized.
- The format for the proposed online Directory of government libraries
will be completed by October 1999, making it possible for librarians in
government libraries to register their institutions via the Internet.
After a trial period of six months, the Directory project will be reviewed
at the 2000 conference.
Future Conference Programs
- Jerusalem 2000. The section will have an open session on "Government
Services to Special Populations" with an emphasis on refugees.
- Boston 2001. The section is considering an open session on "The
Business of Government Information" with subtopics on government
information, free or fee; government information as a private business;
repackaging of government information; and marketing and sales. This
topic might be expanded to include copyright issues.
- Glasgow 2002. The section is investigating a pre-conference with the
assistance of the UK Government Libraries Group. This pre-conference
would take place in London and include library visits with informal
programs on management of government libraries, planning and evaluation of
services, and personnel issues.
- Berlin 2003. The section is investigating the possibility of library
visits in Berlin.
