Women Librarians in China: Status and Motivation Analysis
by DONG XIAOYING and ZHANG SHUHUA

Abstract:
This is the first survey and report on the situation of female librarians in China. The sample survey covered 61 libraries of different types and 319 female librarians nationwide. The report revealed the status of women in libraries from the aspects of percentage of staff, educational background, professional title and position in management. The motivation analysis included the attitude of female librarians toward the library profession, their expectation of professional qualifications and continuing professional education and training, their publications in professional journals, and their satisfaction with the current situation. The survey showed that although the number of female librarians is more than 50% of the library staff, their role in senior or high-ranking administration is still limited.
