Information Literacy Section

Strategic Plan
2004-2005

Mission

The Information Literacy Section has the mission of fostering cooperation on user education in all types of libraries as well as providing opportunities to exchange experiences and ideas about information literacy globally.

Goals, Priorities and Actions

The Information Literacy Section supports mainly four of the IFLA priorities with the following goals:

A. Objective (Supporting the role of libraries in society).

To foster the development of an information literate citizenry with the technical and critical thinking skills and abilities needed to identify, acquire, manage and use information to enrich all aspects of their work and personal lives.

Actions
  1. Create a document with the history of the section, including a compilation of past newsletters, workshops, and open sessions created by the Section/Round Table in the past - Eva Tolonen/Teodora Oker-Blom
  2. Directory of previous officers and SC Members - Christina Tovote
  3. Update section's website information on IFLANET - Hannelore Rader

B. Objective (Promoting literacy, reading, and lifelong learning)

To promote information literacy as a foundation for lifelong learning in different sectors of society and in all countries (students, parents, educators, decision-makers, education administrators)

C. Objective (Developing Library Professionals)

To promote and monitor the development of education and training for librarians as teachers, educational advocates, collaborators, and pedagogy experts

Actions
  1. Explore with the Latin American Regional Section the organization of joint program/ workshop on "Information literacy for lifelong learning: Implementing programs and the implications for staff developers/trainers." in Spanish in Buenos Aires.

D. Objective (Promoting standards, guidelines, and best practices)

To identify and encourage effective practices in information literacy in all types of libraries around the world
