President's Report

Outgoing President Andrew Miller welcomed new INTAMEL members from eastern Europe to the conference and expressed the hope that other eastern European invitees had found the conference stimulating and would consider INTAMEL membership. President Miller reviewed highlights of his three years in office: the technological explosion; excellent conferences in Copenhagen, Perth and Budapest; revision of the Annual Statistics spearheaded by Hannover; members' pressure to include more "content" in the annual conference. President Miller expressed his regret that he was unable to attend the 98 IFLA conference on behalf of INTAMEL which is an IFLA Roundtable member. He suggested that INTAMEL's new president establish communication with IFLA as soon as possible after this conference.

Secretary-Treasurer's Report

The minutes of the 1997 Annual Meeting in Perth were amended to read that "Dr. A. Fleming" was present.

The Statement of Receipts and Expenditures for the period ending July 31, 1998 showed a closing fund balance of $10,316.00 (Can.). An additional $1,275.00 was received after the closing date and not reflected in the total. The Secretary-Treasurer urged members to ensure that they return an updated membership form each year. Otherwise, those making an electronic transfer of their membership fee are not easily traced.

Connie Cooke, retired member, has resigned from Intamel.

1998 Intamel Conference

Conference members expressed their thanks and appreciation to host Jeno Kiss and his staff for providing an excellent programme and warm hospitality.

INTAMEL Statistics

W. Andresen reviewed the progress of the Working Group on Statistics. She noted that members would like to collect more statistical information than is currently available, that there is agreement to send the form via e-mail and that to date it has not been possible to develop a web-site. It was agreed that the incoming INTAMEL officers would work with IFLA members to develop an INTAMEL web-site as part of the IFLA site.

To address the wish for more statistical information, it was suggested that the annual conference programme provide more time for professional content. This principle was accepted and the 1999 Zurich host will try to accommodate.

Upcoming INTAMEL Conferences

Christian Relly, 99 conference host, reviewed a draft of the programme. C. Relly will try to balance professional and cultural content to meet members' wishes. Members will be asked on the registration form to volunteer a paper/topic. Two areas suggested were Youth Services and Multilingual Services. It is not possible to change the September 19 - 25, 1999 conference dates to accommodate the Jewish high holidays.

Dan Wilson, St. Louis County System, sought input for the St. Louis conference in Year 2000. September 17 - 23 is the proposed date, with a possible post conference programme in New Orleans. Glen Holt, St. Louis Public Library will co-host.

Election of Officers (Three-Year Term)

For President:
    D. Wilson - nominated by A. Miller, seconded by C. Hunsberger
    W. Andresen - nominated by F. Andrae, seconded by C. Lux
In a proper ballot, D. Wilson was elected.

For Secretary-Treasurer:

    J. Boman - nominated by M. Barnes, seconded by S. Brewer.
There being no other nominations, J. Boman was acclaimed.

Other Business

B. Sorensen agreed to work with the incoming President and Secretary-Treasurer to facilitate staff exchanges.

W. Renes congratulated P. Wressell and S. Brewer for publishing a very professional newsletter for INTAMEL members.

M. Barnes thanked the outgoing President and Secretary Treasurer for their work over the previous 3 years.

There being no further business, the President declared the meeting closed.
