The Information Technology section had another busy round of activities in the IFLA Congress in Puerto Rico 2011.

On the last SC meeting we decided to organize a core session on security issues in library systems (digital disasters). Some suggested titles: "Experiences and preparation for digital disasters", "IT Disaster planning for libraries", "Information Technology for Disaster Prevention and Disaster recovery", "Is your library security system safe?" The first stage of this work is preparation of a Call for Papers.

Programme announcement: Ten years on: the use of RFID technology in library context

I'm very pleased to announce a two hours panel slot (Wednesday, 17th August, 13.45 till 15.45, Session Room 104) during the 77th IFLA General Conference and Assembly as kick off in this field. This slot was prepared together with the IT section of IFLA, and we were able to win well-known keynote speakers from Europe, North-America and Australia who will give us an introduction into this technology and present some of their cutting-edge findings.

The Information Technology Section had its first Standing committee meeting in Puerto Rico. The following members were elected as its officers for 2011:

The section also approved Edmund Balnaves as the continuing Information Officer.

IFLA IT Section Minutes 2010 released

The Minutes, ITS Section Meeting Gothenburg 2010 have been released. Key areas of focus are:

* Semantic web

* Open source

Karen Latimer, the Chair of the Section for Library Buildings and Equipment proposed that the ITS co-organize a joint satellite preconference in Puerto Rico.

The section agreed to select the topic of Semantic Web for IFLA Helsinki in 2012, taking advantage of the existing initiatives in Finland.
