Copyright laws have been established in many countries in the print age and have not been updated to meet the new needs of the digital era. There is a serious need of special laws and legal terms for this variety of media to increase and preserve accessibility, not only on the national level but also on an international one.

IconoTag is a research project to study picture indexing that will provide automatic multilingual indexing for pictures. James Turner, professor at the Université de Montréal, is the researcher. Claire Nigay is the research assistant. They are studying ways to improve access to audiovisual materials and to help people find information on the web.

UNESCO launches new logo for World Day for Audiovisual Heritage

The winning design, which was submitted by Mr Achilleus Coronel of the Philippines, was chosen by a Jury comprising members of the Co-ordinating Council of Audiovisual Archives Associations (CCAAA).

The design represents cellulose film stock that forms an adorned box symbolizing collected media in its traditional state. The two arrows to the right are the universal symbol of the ‘forward’ button and represent archiving of media for future generations. These arrows also form a stack of boxes or an icon that can stand for a database or hard-disk storage.
