Project goals and objectives

The ISBD consolidated edition of 2011 has positioned this IFLA standard as a core standard for universal bibliographic control, while its representation in the W3C RDF standard (work done by the ISBD/XML Study Group) enables its use within the Open Linked Data communities and enhances developments of Semantic Web bibliographic tools and services.

Goals and objectives

IFLA Cataloguing Section's ISBD Review Group approved the recommendations from its Material Designation Study Group to develop an XML Schema for the ISBD.

The Final Report, Functional Requirements for Subject Authority Data (FRSAD), approved by the Standing Committee of the Classification and Indexing Section in June 2010, is now available. The report may be downloaded as a complete PDF document. Individual sections are also available separately, including the appendices: Modeling Aboutness, Relationship of FRSAD with FRBR and FRAD, FRSAD Model and Other Models, and Examples from Subject Authority Systems.

Metadata Decisions for Digital Libraries is a survey undertaken in 2007 by Marcia Zeng (Kent State University), Jaesun Lee (National Library of Korea), and Allene Hayes (Library of Congress) to identify major issues and concerns in the metadata community that should be addressed by the IFLA Working Group on Guidelines for Digital Libraries. Digital publishing is rapidly spreading into different publishing domains, at present especially within the academic world and among government and municipal bodies. For libraries that have started collecting and organizing this digital material it is obvious that it is much more time consuming and complicated to handle these kinds of resources than the traditional ones — if bibliographic data are not delivered together with the resources.
