The radical change in the operational environment of libraries has set new challenges for library leadership and management. The traditional method for libraries has been collecting a substantial amount of statistical data. This is no longer enough for modern management. New ways of analysing efficiency, impact and outcomes measurement are needed to obtain better data and information for marketing and managing as well as demonstrating the impact of libraries. In addition to the quantitative data, one also needs qualitative data and methods of identifying users' needs.

Whenever we communicate with politicians, funding bodies or library stakeholders, we need number, statistics and evidence to prove our point and underline our arguments.

The workshop will cover the following questions:

- Why should we study statistics?
- Which aspects or library work should we focus on?
- How can we collect reliable data?
- How can we interpret the data we have?

- How can we present the data to make our point?

Library Statistics for the 21st Century World

An international collaboration between IFLA, the UNESCO Institute of Statistics and the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) has developed standards for new library indicators for the twenty-first century. The existing international library statistics were developed nearly 40 years ago.
