Ukraine: Latest cascade workshops reach 70 librarians

In late 2011, the Ukraine Library Association organised a number of cascade workshops as part of the Building Strong Library Associations programme. The workshops, in Kyiv, followed a series of cascade activities including workshops at the 2011 conference in Crimea and in Kharkiv.

Cameroon: BSLA second workshop raises visibility of a young association

The IFLA BSLA Programme, launched in 2010, is taking shape and making an impact on the information profession in Cameroon. The first training, successfully organized in January 2011, focused on Modules 1&2 of the BSLA training packages. The first workshop resulted in the re-birth of the Library Professional Association, ABADCAM, which is now active with 25 paid up members. The second BSLA workshop (Workshop-2) was successfully delivered on 17 -19 November 2011, in Yaoundé, Cameroon. This report highlights the activities and outcomes of the BSLA Cameroon Workshop 2.

Botswana: BSLA Workshop 2 focuses on advocacy and communication

Following the stakeholder summit in November 2010 and workshop in May 2011, the second workshop in the Building Strong Library Associations Programme in Botswana was held November 9-11 at Boipuso Hall, Gaborone. Core trainer Winnie Vitzansky facilitated the workshop.

At the workshop, participants reported an extremely positive result: since the start of the BSLA project in Botswana, the Botswana Library Association has more than doubled its membership.

Project Summary

During 2011 the Library Association of Samoa undertook two projects funded by the IFLA ALP programme. These were a workshop and training session for the librarians of Samoa and a National Library Week.

Revised Library Statistics for Advocacy training module now available

A revised and expanded version of the training module, Library Statistics for Advocacy, is now available from the IFLA Online Learning Platform. This module was designed by a working group of IFLA's Statistics and Evaluation Section.

Associations begin to assess the impact of the BSLA programme

All six countries that commenced projects as part of the IFLA Building Strong Library Association programme (BSLA) have begun to assess the impact of the programme, ahead of a mini-congress to be held with participants from the six countries in February 2012, and the completion of the projects mid-2012. During this stage of the project, associations are carrying out member surveys and focus groups, some for the first time, to identify member needs and areas for association development.

About the Association

The project is a collaboration between the Nepal Community Library Association (NCLA), and the Nepal Library Association (NLA). The NLA will participate in activities and provide resource persons to the project. NCLA and NLA will collaborate to advocate for development of the library and information sector as a whole, especially at the regional and local level due to the instability in national government at present.

80th Anniversary of the Lithuanian Librarians Association

This year the Lithuanian Librarians Association (LLA) celebrates two anniversaries important for the Lithuanian librarian's community: LLA was founded 80 years ago (1931) and joined International Federation of Library Associations (IFLA) 75 years ago (1936). IFLA President-elect, Sinikka Sipilä, will be giving a presentation on the activities of IFLA and the Finnish Library Association.
