The third edition succeeds the fifth update of second edition. One of the main features has been the adoption of new and revised international standards, notably the International Standard Identifier for Libraries and Related Organizations, the ISBN 13 and the linking ISSN. New fields have been added for recording the Persistent Record Identifier. Uniform Conventional Headings for Legal and Religious texts are now catered for with separate fields. A number of fields have been revised: archival materials, manuscripts and documentation produced by the ISSN International Centre.

The Permanent UNIMARC Committee (PUC) was formed in 1991, in accordance with resolution No. 5 issued at the Seminar on Bibliographic Records held in Stockholm before the IFLA General Conference, August 1990. The main objective of the PUC is to control the UNIMARC format in accordance with the principles of Universal Bibliographic Control.

UCA is responsible for the preparation and dissemination of IFLA publications and other documentation regarding UNIMARC

UNIMARC Bibliographic

The UNIMARC Bibliographic format was first created and proposed by IFLA in 1977, with the title UNIMARC: Universal MARC format. A second version was published in 1980 followed, in 1983, by the UNIMARC Handbook. Finally, in 1987, the UNIMARC Manual was published.
