Safety tips

As in other countries, there are a few basic precautions you should take in South Africa to ensure that your stay is as pleasant and safe as possible.

  • In South Africa, traffic travels on the LEFT of the road. NEVER get out of a vehicle or cross a road without first checking for oncoming traffic.

  • Do not carry large sums of money with you.

  • Avoid ostentatious displays of jewellery, cameras, cell phones and other valuables.

  • Explore in groups, not by yourself, and keep to busy streets.

  • At night, steer clear of dark and isolated areas.

  • The police, traffic officers and hotel security guards will direct you if you get lost.

  • Your hotel or the nearest tourist information office can help you find a reliable taxi service.

  • The police can help you find your embassy or consulate.

  • Never leave your luggage unattended. Store valuables in the hotel's safety deposit box.

  • Keep your hotel room locked at all times.
