Message from the Chairman, Prof John Willemse
The University of South Africa Library in partnership with IFLA, the State Library and other
local institutions, is delighted to invite you to Pretoria, the Jacaranda City, during the most
spectacular time of the year in South Africa. This is a conference of firsts - the first
interlending and document supply international conference to be held in Africa, for many
of the participants their first visit to South Africa and Africa, and their first conference of this
type.
The programme theme, "Empowering society through the global flow of information",
promises to address issues affecting information professionals in both the developing and
developed world. The globalisation of information is a trend which seemingly threatens to
disempower the developing world. Yet, properly harnessed, it could be the gateway to the
information superhighway - even for disadvantaged countries. It is essential for all of us to
provide a better document delivery and interlending service than ever before. Debate,
discussion, networking and strengthening existing ties with colleagues will be the golden
thread running through the conference days.
The 6th Interlending and Document Supply International Conference continues the tradition
started in 1988. The most recent conferences were held in England, Canada and Denmark, and
were each attended by approximately 200 delegates from more than 40 different countries.
It will be early summer in sunny South Africa - for visitors from the Northern Hemisphere a
welcome second season of warmth and light. The organising committee's sincere wish is that
our conference guests will enjoy not only the season's delights, but also the warm hospitality
for which South Africans have been justly famous.
