FAIFE sessions give you the answers to what is just now happening in the world. Whether it is Wikileaks, Twitter revolutions, or who really controls the Internet - FAIFE sessions bring you the vital themes, most interesting speakers and ideas to how to bring it all to your everyday life.
The programme tackles the transition from classical censorship to cybercensorship, the phenomena of the Darknet and the role of libraries in the transition. Presenters and panellists will debate the transparency explosion caused by Wikileaks and the extent to which social media complemented such a phenomenon and fermented revolution - and what libraries can learn from the events of the past 12 months.
Note: to prepare for the theme while travelling to Puerto Rico try reading Yevgeni Morozov's book The Net Delusion. It is the first choice of the FAIFE Book club.

15 August 2011 13:45 - 15:45 | Room: Grand Salon A | SI
Congress track 2: Policy, strategy and advocacy.
The age of the e-book is well and truly upon us. More and more library users own e-readers and are beginning to demand lending services that suit them. At the same time, several major publishing houses are reluctant to enter the e-book lending market, while others have imposed restrictive terms that cause library and information professionals to be concerned about user privacy, purchasing power and the future of the public library as a public access intermediary that can lend reading materials in the digital age. Will the models being developed for e-lending enable libraries to continue to fulfil their traditional role in the community, or will publishers develop new models that will circumvent the public library forever? How can library professionals influence the development of licensing and contract models? Can user expectations about freedom of expression and privacy be met in this new environment?
The session will focus more on discussion of the issues than paper presentations. Following an opening summary of the topic, a chaired discussion will begin that gradually brings more participants to the stage. Participants include FAIFE and CLM Committee members, representatives from the publishing industry, authors, e-book experts and collecting societies.

Session 144 — Winds of Change: a taxonomy of clouds for libraries — OCLC Parallel Symposium
16 August 2011 13:45 - 15:45 | Room: 209
While cloud computing is a relatively new technology model for IT services, it’s becoming clear that there are a number of ways in which organizations—including libraries—can utilize these resources.
Come hear Matt Goldner, Technology Advocate for OCLC, discuss the challenges and benefits of library cooperation within a cloud environment. He will explore how the original drive to create cloud systems – a desire to avoid the costs of redundant equipment and locally hosted software – has evolved into several different types of cloud solutions. For many organizations, cloud computing will indeed simplify processes while saving time and money. But there are also greater benefits to be had when cloud computing enables sharing on many more levels.
Jay Jordan, President and CEO of OCLC, will speak to how OCLC’s long-term strategy will build on the promise of cloud computing in order to achieve network effects through Web-scale library cooperation. This will allow every member to benefit from shared data and the participation of others.

JAY JORDAN, President and CEO, OCLC
MATTHEW R. GOLDNER, Product & Technology Advocate, OCLC

Knowledge Cafés are all about learning, about bringing people together to listen and participate in open and creative conversations on topics that interest them. A Knowledge Café can focus your organisation's knowledge, strengthen its networks, help a Community of Practice to get started and make knowledge sharing part of your organisation. They can be used organisation wide or just in your department to identify options for the way forward and develop innovative strategies.
This session will introduce you to a simple and recommended method of running a Knowledge Café that can be used by anyone, without any prior experience or specialised equipment. We will also run a few 'taster' topics, on library and information matters of interest to participants, to let you take part in a live Knowledge Café.
Topics are likely to include:
- Learning from lessons learned
- Using Knowledge Cafés as part of an induction process for elected members after elections
- Social media and enabling knowledge sharing
At the end of this session you will be able to run a Knowledge Café in your own organisation with confidence. You will also have participated in some lively professional discussions. All you need to bring is an open mindset and a willingness to collaborate.
