As part of our regional workshop on a strong and sustainable library field in Sub-Saharan Africa, we are holding a short conference focused on how libraries can contribute to the work and objectives of the United Nations in the region. Read More
Around 75 librarians, urban planners, academic researchers, and economists will come together to explore how libraries contribute to sustainable urban development. Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 11 directly addresses Sustainable Cities and Communities, while some of the other SDGs relating to Good Health and Well Being (SDG 3), Quality Education (SDG 4) (SDG 13), both touch on key determinants of sustainable urbanisation and represent areas where libraries play a supportive role. IFLA participted actively in last week's European Regional Forum on Sustainable Development, drawing on the rich experience of Polish libraries in particular in both supporting the response to crises, and in promoting inclusive development. Read More
In a little over a month, the city of Daejeon, Korea, will welcome key urban and regional leaders and thinkers from around the world in order to advance the sustainable urbanisation agenda. The theme chosen for the event – only the 7th such occasion – is local and regional governments breaking through as one. Every three years, United Cities and Local Governments organises the World Summit of Local and Regional Leaders, bringing together mayors and senior city and regional officials from around the world. This is an opportunity to share and take inspiration from the work of local government everywhere, in support of sustainable urbanisation. Read More
IFLA is proud to be working with the National Library of Indonesia to host a side-event to the Urban 20 meeting of mayors, focused on how cities can draw on all elements of their learning infrastructure to deliver inclusive education. The event takes place on 30 August 2022, from 9am local time. Read More
The Urban 20 Summit brings together mayors from G20 countries around the world in order to explore and highlight the role of cities in achieving key policy objectives. IFLA will participate in the meeting, using the opportunity to underline how a new vision of libraries, and concerted efforts to support and mobilise them. Read More
From 26 to 30 June, mayors, UN agencies, local officials, NGOs and experts met at the 11th World Urban Forum, to discuss how to transform cities and so deliver sustainable development. IFLA was present in order to underline the place of libraries and information in making this happen. Read More
Under the theme 'transforming our cities for a better urban future', the 11th edition of the Forum brings a new emphasis on the need for change and sustainability. As institutions embedded in communities, dedicated to providing inclusive, universal and empowering services, there is much for libraries to contribute, as IFLA's latest article indicates. Read More
