Human Rights Day 2018
10 December 2018 marks the 70th anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. IFLA will be focusing on the importance of this document for libraries, and the contribution our institutions make to its realisation.
IFLA gives a major role to human rights both in its own missions and in its advocacy work. In addition to the rights to free expression and free access to information, a number of other human rights are at the heart of library work.
Libraries also depend on respect for human rights in wider society in order to be able to do their jobs effectively.
Therefore, IFLA will be working, both on 10 December and in the days before, to talk about the relationship between libraries and human rights. A series of posts on the Policy and Advocacy Blog is looking at individual articles throughout the week, and we will publish a video and statement on the day itself.
We are also looking for examples of how libraries and library associations around the world are celebrating the anniversary (please send your examples to esmeralda.moscatelli@ifla.org!). Don’t forget our guide, published earlier this year, on how you can get involved.
Finally, and we have produced a poster that you can download, print, and use to show your commitment and start conversations.
