Arab Parliamentary Libraries Network established
The first regional meeting of Arab parliamentary libraries was convened at the Arab Institute for Parliamentary Training and Legislative Studies in Beirut, Lebanon, Jan. 19-20, with the technical support of USAID-funded and State University of New York/Center for International Development-implemented legislative strengthening program in Lebanon. During this two-day event, attended by librarians and research staff from the parliaments of Algeria, Bahrain, Djibouti, Iraq, Jordan, Lebanon, Morocco, Oman, Tunisia and the UAE, participants discussed services offered by their libraries and research services, opportunities for networking and collaboration, and ways to improve library and research services provided to the Members and staff of their respective parliaments.
To achieve these goals, the participants joined in laying the groundwork for the creation of the new Arab Parliamentary Libraries Network (APLN). They drafted and signed the Network’s constitution, elected the Network’s executive committee, and devised a plan of action for future development. In order to formalize the Network, Noureddine Bouchkouj, Secretary General of the Arab Inter-Parliamentary Union, agreed to issue formal invitations to secretaries-general of all Arab parliaments inviting and encouraging their parliaments to become members of the new network.
The event’s sessions were moderated by Mr. John Pullinger, Chairman, IFLA’s Section on Libraries and Research Services for Parliaments, and Librarian and Director General of Information Services at the UK House of Commons; Mr. Clements, former Director of Service Delivery, Department of Information Services at the UK House of Commons; and Ms. Moira Fraser, former Parliamentary Librarian and Group Manager, Information and Knowledge at the Parliament of New Zealand.
The event was hosted by the Arab Inter-Parliamentary Union and the Lebanese Parliament. It was organized for the Arab Institute for Parliamentary Training and Legislative Studies, by the State University of New York's Center for International Development (SUNY/CID) and funded by the United States Agency for International Development (USAID).
