Hello from a bright and sunny Africa!

IFLA is currently entering an exciting phase where a new vision is being crafted for the profession. A large scale IFLA membership approach is being developed to ensure that every member’s voice is heard and that a global movement that reflects IFLA as a truly global organization is achieved.

It has been a great privilege for me to be a member of the Governing Board for the last two years because of the opportunity to be involved in crafting this new vision that focuses on IFLA members as a key resource of IFLA, and make libraries more valued development partners in all countries.

In order to enable me to continue with this purposeful work, I strongly appeal for your vote as I seek your mandate for a 2nd Term as a member of the Governing Board.

During my first term on the Governing Board as Chair of Division V, I was deeply involved in promoting IFLA’s Strategic Directions and Key Initiatives especially through the Action for Development Through Libraries Programme (ALP) Committee and the Professional Committee (PC).

As Chair of IFLA Africa Section, I was deeply involved in re-positioning libraries in Africa to participate actively in national development. These activities led to a significant increase in the number of functional library associations on the continent. Over time, I have been privileged to serve IFLA in such capacities as:

  • Chair, IFLA Division V (Africa, Asia & Oceania and Latin America & the Caribbean) 2015 – 2017
  • Chair, IFLA Africa Section (2011-2015)
  • Standing Committee member of IFLA Public Libraries Section (2005-2009)
  • Member of Team that developed IFLA Manifesto on Transparency, good Governance and Freedom from Corruption

If elected for a Second Term on the Governing Board, I will work with IFLA to achieve the ambitious goal of engaging members in developing a new global vision for libraries; promote better communication and inclusiveness. I will use my experience to connect the work on library types and services to enhance the impact of Professional Units on the regions. In furtherance of IFLA’s philosophy that we need to act locally in order to make a difference globally, I will participate actively in the International Advocacy Programme; BSLA; mentor young librarians and advocate for issues such as public access to information; copyright; information literacy and multilingualism.
